It's that time of year again! I am planning on applying for the Fall 2019 quarter. The summer 2018 information sessions are now open. Who else is applying ?
I also got a denial email But congrats to those of you who got in!
Just curious, for those who were accepted, what do you think made you stand out? I had really good grades (4.0 prereq, 3.8 cumulative) and have a master's in an unrelated field, but only recently got my CNA a few months ago. I'm thinking that my lack of healthcare experience did me in.

I'm sorry you were denied. I was denied from USD last month and was crushed, so I know how you feel. I don't think you should give up.
The formula is not one-size fits all. For me, I believe I stood out because I spent months writing my SoP (started in Feb 2018 and submitted it Oct 2018). I ended up with 10 drafts.
I did have a pretty solid amount of hours and volunteer experience, both locally and abroad, because volunteering is my passion. I tailored my SoP to highlight these experiences and discussed my future plans I hoped to pursue as a RN.
I had leadership experience, research experience, and hands-on patient care experience in multiple settings (ER, birth center, rehabilitative therapy, etc). I also had strong LORs from people in the medical field. I think that maybe if you work as a CNA for a year, that would help you! I wish you the best of luck.

Personally, I think UCLA really stands by the whole holistic approach to choosing between their applicants (which I personally have always admired). My cum gpa was below 3.0 but I took all science pre-reqs after at a community college and got straight As. I have a job in a field unrelated to health care (but my job serves an underrepresented community which aligns with my nursing goals) and I have a lot of volunteer experience, over 900+ hours. I also spent about 8+ months working on my SOP. I built very strong connections with the people who wrote my letters of rec as well. I can't speak for the people in admissions but I think they REALLY look at your SOP, Personal History Statement and LORs. That's just me.

I 100% agree with everything you said. I was actually denied from USD last month as well.
So in short, I think UCLA values why you want to be a nurse, what got you to where you are now and if others can attest to your leadership, passions and academic competency.

I had a LOR from a professor/chair advisor, physician assistant & nurse practitioner.
I volunteered in Mexico/downtown San Diego as well as through a rehabilitative program at school. I also taught English in rural Thailand and participated in an internship that worked alongside nurses.
My advice would be to stick to one program you’re passionate about rather than having a ton of programs with only a few hours at each.

Thank you! I have my UCLA stuff doubled up so it goes to both my gmail and work addresses- and nothing in either, when I definitely did get emails from both RF at MECN directly as well as updates about my application. So I will just play the anxiously waiting game.
