UCLA MECN FALL 2013

Published

Have been looking around and haven't really seen a topic on this yet. This is my dream school/program. I am from Seattle so I am having to get a lot of info from them long-distance instead of going to an information session. Has anyone gone to an information session yet?

Oops! It turns out allnurses.com does not allow social networking links on their forums... so the FB link to our group page has been removed (my apologies, allnurses.com!) Unfortunately, our group page does not come up in a Google search yet, possibly because it's so new (created yesterday). If you're trying to join the group and missed the link, you can still find your way by typing the group's name (UCAL MECN 2015) into FB's search box. Hope that helps!

Hello folks! First post, and congratulations to everyone who got accepted!

Found out today I'm on the wait list! Crossing fingers...:nailbiting:

Hi everyone! Here's some info I found out today, for anyone who's considering taking epidemiology at UCLA this summer…

The acceptance letter mentioned Nursing 50 as the approved epidemiology course to take at UCLA (for anyone who still needs to fulfil that requirement). But I also noticed that Epidemiology 100 (another UCLA course) is on the official approved courses list for the MECN program. I emailed someone within the MECN program to ask whether the School of Nursing prefers that we take Nursing 50, or if it’s acceptable to enrol in Epidemiology 100 instead. I got a response back saying both are acceptable to fulfil the requirement. Both courses are 4 units (so they will cost the same) and both are being offered during the summer ‘session A’ (which goes from June 24 – Aug 2). However, they differ in duration, time of day, and set-up as follows:

Nursing 50

Tuesdays & Thursdays / 9:30 – 11:50am (2hrs / 20 min)

Consists of lecture and lab

Epidemiology 100

Tuesdays & Thursdays / 5:30 – 9:00pm (3.5 hrs)

Consists of lecture and discussion

You can look through the schedule of classes here:

Schedule of Classes Home Page

As far as fees go for these courses, I’m still trying to work it all out. But it looks like we’d be paying $339 per unit, plus an $8 per unit ‘instructional enhancement fee’ (so those two ‘per-unit’ fees x4 = $1388). There’s also a flat “campus fee / registration fee”, which is $65 for graduate students, and $350 for visiting students. I’m not sure if we’d be considered visiting students during the summer, since we officially begin the program in the fall. But looking at both possibilities, either of the courses (Nursing 50 or Epidemiology 100) would cost something like $1453 (at the lower end), or $1738 (at the higher end, if we’re considered visiting students in the summer). Don’t quote me on those totals, as it’s highly possible there will be other fees added in (I know when I was an undergrad at UCLA, there were mandatory student health fees, etc). But just in case you’re interested, this is where I got these figures:

Has anyone found more affordable options for fulfilling the Epidemiology requirement?

Hello folks! First post, and congratulations to everyone who got accepted!

Found out today I'm on the wait list! Crossing fingers...:nailbiting:

Good luck, fingers crossed!!

Thanks sandstone! I want to join the FB group but I want to be official, so let's hope that will happen :)

Btw, about the timing of letters...from cursory experience I've had doing bulk mailing, it's just slow, because you have to presort the mail to make it cheaper to send. There's a way of grouping zipcodes that makes it convenient for USPS. A previous poster mentioned that UCLA had an internal mailing department - they're probably handling the presorting before giving it to USPS.

My letter was dated February 26, so the timing seems about right...I live in LA so it would be 1-2 days, but it might take a couple days just to sort all that mail :p

missbettyboo, thank you for the research! Very much appreciated :)

I'm not sure about more affordable options given it's a short list and the majority are universities...

I think UCLA would be the best bet for me since it's the closest commute, unless there's an online option somewhere. In my case, if I want to take it somewhere else, I'll have to deal with their Admissions department to ask if I can take only one course :p

But if anyone else knows more, please share!

Congrats, jkm07. Thanks also for sharing your credentials. It is especially helpful to those of us who were rejected as we prepare to reapply (or not !).

Two BYU epidemiology courses are on the approved list: Brigham Young University Health 375 or Health 345. See: M.S.N. MECN Prerequisite Courses | UCLA School of Nursing

hello everyone! I received my acceptance letter yesterday, and as of this morning an email indicating that my official decision had been made. So you might want to check your online status again. Hopefully everyone's official letter will be available soon!

I also received my online letter today with the intent to register link. So exciting! Does anyone know of apartment complexes with good access (bus, walking, biking, or shuttle) to UCLA? We are thinking Santa Monica, West LA or Westwood (not Westwood Village) areas.

I'm a big fan of anything South of Wilshire Blvd. There are multiple buses that run through that area. The Bruin or Big Blue Buses will take you to/pretty close to the School of Nursing. The apartments on the hill where the undergrads and frats are can get pretty rowdy at times, making it tough to study.

I stayed at an apartment complex right by Denny's, Palomino and the Hammer Museum during my last years of undergrad and I loved it there--very quiet, but within walking distance to Westwood Village.

For those on the waitlist...I got the email back confirming that I want to hold my place on the waitlist. Included in the email was information on taking Epidemiology. Are any of you signing up for that now or waiting until you know that you got into the program?
