Master's Entry Program in Nursing
This would be there first cohort. I remember looking at this page about 3 weeks ago and the application was closed. Im surprised they opened it so soon and have a quick deadline coning up (Feb 1). I already applied to programs but could definitely use a back up since I live in the bay area. I just dont know if I can make that deadline (as far as LORs)
Thanks for the information!! No, I only applied to these two programs and I didn't know much about the MEPN track when I applied (and still don't). My goal is to be a NP, but I've always heard it's best to work as a RN for a few years to get the necessary experience instead of jumping into a NP position. I was given a scholarship for Davis and I still have to add them to my FASFA list, so maybe that'll help my decision as well. I don't know much about the MEPN to NP track, is it possible to double dip some of the classes? Or will the NP program be another 2 years or so? I also have some homework to do on the CCNE and ACEN accreditation, I'm not familiar with requirements like these either. What school are you leaning towards going to? And why? If you don't mind sharing….

No problem! My goal is to also become an NP, but I would definitely work as an RN first. The MEPN will allow you to do that. With the MEPN, you get a MSN degree as an "Advanced generalist." The biggest difference I see between the MEPN curriculum and the ABSN curriculum is the Advanced Pathophysiology and Pharmacology and focus on evidence-based practices. You bring up a good question about how the double dipping some of the MEPN classes to the NP track will work. As I look at the NP curriculum vs the MEPN curriculum at UC Davis, I don't see much overlap except for the basic pharmacology course. You'd have to check with them about it. My understanding is that with an MSN, you can get a post-masters NP certificate relatively quickly in comparison to a BSN to MSN-FNP program. Also, the MSN to DNP is another route you would be able to do to earn your NP as the industry is trending toward DNP education for the NP profession.
For me, I'm leaning toward University of San Diego's MSN-CNL program. They have an established MEPN program, and I believe this is their 9th or 10th year doing it. They just built a brand new simulation center for the school of nursing, and I liked the curriculum structure. San Diego area has several hospitals with new graduate residency programs (Sharp, Scripps, Rady Children's, Palomar Health, UCSD, etc), and the last cohort had all but one get a job within three months. These hospitals like USD MEPN grads and the MEPN reputation is pretty good down there. Also, their curriculum does have overlap with their DNP NP program. I am checking out UC Davis tomorrow, and I'll update you all with any new findings. Really hoping to speak with some faculty and seeing all of the nursing facilities. I'm just walking in as they said they couldn't offer a formal tour at the moment, which is a bummer because this is the first time they're having this program. Also my deposit for USD is due next week, so need to make the decision asap :)
Wow! Congratulations to you and the other applicants who got in! Can you please share how much the deposit is for Davis?
thanks MamaJanise! At this time Davis is not requiring a deposit. Admitted students should they want to accept the admission offer just have to send an "initial decision," saying whether or not we are accepting by April 15!
For those who got in, are you all working or volunteering in the healthcare field right now or did you guys just graduate? I wanted to apply this time around but I still have to take the group communication course. It would be nice to know your backgrounds so I can get a sense of what the school is accepting. It's been almost 10 years since I received my BS in Foods and Nutrition and I've had a whole myriad of life changing events to set me back on my path to becoming a NP. I hope my classes aren't too old. I still had a cumulative GPA of 3.71 with my MEPN GPA at 3.9. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!
Great GPA! I've been working as a CNA for just over a year now to get a feel for the healthcare world because my BA is in Communication in Public Affairs. I got in 2014 from Chico State and worked while getting my pre requisites done. I used the Samuel Merritt guidelines for classes and they were all the same for Davis, except pharmacology and pathophysiology, which are only requirements for SMU. I'm not sure which program you're applying for, but I would recommend e mailing or calling the counselors or advisors to check about your classes not expiring. I don't think your BS would make a difference, but maybe if you were trying to use some of the classes as pre reqs? Hopefully you can use them still!!

What did you find out when you visited Davis? Any new opinions or information from them??
I am wait listed as well, and have not been able to get in touch with anyone in the admissions office to answer my questions. I have emailed twice and called in. Has anyone on the wait list been able to speak with someone to find out more information? I would like to know:
a) how many people are wait listed,
b) whether we are ranked on the wait list, and
c) whether we will hear about changes in our wait list status (e.g. getting higher up in the list) as time goes on.
Thank you!

They've also talked about the possibility of UC Davis MEPN graduates getting preference to the UC Davis Medical Center New Graduate Nurse Residency Program. They've met with the nurse recruitment staff from UC Davis Medical Center and have discussed this as a possibility because staff from the medical center also helped put together the curriculum, but nothing is set in stone yet. Just something to keep in mind! We'd also be doing most of our clinicals at UC Davis Medical Center giving us the opportunity to get to know staff better.
