Hi everybody! I haven't found an active discussion thread for September 2019 applicants to UBC's BSN program yet, so here is one!

I feel like I got my thoughts down on majority of the questions, but I usually wrote more for the first two questions because I tried my best to explain both perspectives. I did get cut off twice as I was writing my last word but I'm sure they'll understand what I was saying.

I'm applying with a bachelor's degree in Health Science from SFU! On SFU's 4.33 scale, I'm currently at a 3.97 for my last 30 credits. I'm not sure how that transfers to UBC... I did contact UBC admissions and they told me it stays as it is based on my school-- which is not what i've heard. Oh well! In terms of volunteering, I've been at a senior home for about 4 years now, am a mentor with the Big Sisters of BC organization, and do research in SFU's Injury Prevention Lab. I did do research on the side on a joint project with SFU and Fraser Health for kidney dialysis patients. I was also an executive member for a club at SFU for two years.

Hi sss29! You have a GREAT portfolio in health! I heard about SFU’s Injury Prevention Lab and adore body systems + patient health so I would’ve loved doing something similar!

I may have little experience regarding healthcare/health (in fact, perhaps it’s just applicant anxiety - I consider my supplemental “generic” or “not enough activities”), but I also volunteered at a Nursing Home for 3 years. Recently, I was part of AMS VICE Mental Health as an Educational Outreach and Peer Mentorship volunteer this Term 1 despite it being a short time of only 4 months (had a family emergency and needed to withdraw as a volunteer).

I currently work at Kumon as a tutor (just started this January). Previous work experience: PNE and Tim Hortons. I additionally volunteered as a UBC CEDAR Summer Camp Student Leader last summer and was a Youth Leader at my local parish for 3 years.

In terms of research projects or (academic) accomplishments, I was one of the leaders in my student field group at UBC Land and Food Systems last term. We successfully collaborated with Vancouver’s hua foundation workshop to develop a comprehensive interview process that weighs the pervasive nature of racism and white privilege within Vancouver’s food system; we interviewed around 25 white or light-skinned identifying food policy members attending hua’s workshop White Privilege in the Food System at Vancouver Sustenance Festival 2018 both pre-workshop and post-workshop. It was one of the coolest and most socially aware things I’ve ever done!

Seconding sumad, don’t worry too much about your GPA! I’m sure it will still be in the high 3.00’s!

I PRESSED SUBMIT TOO!

Now that my post-submission anxiety is kicking in, I hope it’s okay if I mentioned overlapping activities under each section BUT focused more on experiences from each activity that I didn’t talk about in detail (since UBC Nursing said we can list experiences “only once/choose the most suitable” <— making me slightly nervous. I hope my chances for admission don’t decrease because of this).

For example, when describing leadership experience, I focused on my role as student leader first (informal, most recent) and then connected that to my role as leader (formal) from two more positions (Camp Leader and Youth Leader). It’s a similar pattern for the others e.g under Membership In Organizations, I briefly reiterated my involvement in a UBC organization that I already mentioned under Community Volunteering/Experience (again, there’s overlap) BUT I mostly talked about my position as Kumon Tutor/teaching others. Would the admissions committee care?

Anyway, I can’t change my application now; I’m sending good positive vibes out to everybody!!!

Hi All!

I'm looking forward to submitting my supplemental today.

I sent in my transcripts early January and only one is showing up as received on my SSC portal. It's making me anxious - is everyone else's showing up as received. I know they said they won't confirm receipt.

Hey! I sent my SFU transcript in the middle of December and they still haven't processed it, so you're not the only one in this situation. The other transcript I sent AFTER the SFU one was also processed, so it makes me think it could have got lost in the delivery process. I called UBC admissions and they assured me that as long as I sent it prior to the deadline (and have the receipt) I'll be fine. If it did get lost, email them in two weeks if it still doesn't show up and they'll help you. But don't worry, it does take 4-5 weeks to process anyways!

Hope this helps with your anxiety, I was in the same position just this morning.

I’m anxious once again - it doesn’t seem to be my month today. Had to email UBC Nursing Undergrad Admissions Coordinator Ruxendra and tell her I had two typos (One Employment date typo in one essay section and one Volunteering date typo as I first mention it in another essay section) when I looked over my submitted supplemental on the SSC ? The overall Employment Form has the correct dates, while the second mention of this volunteering date is correct under the Working for/Caring for Others section.

Thankfully, besides these typos, everything else in my supplemental appears accurately as it should be and was submitted as it should be.

My internet connection at home is unstable so there were a WiFi few cut-outs/technical glitches while constantly saving, editing, and submitting. As a result I may have overlooked those typos! I’m worried - what if my chances of admission are reduced because of that? Thus I told Ruxandra this worry. I want to go into Nursing more than any other career in the world (Langara is my backup, thankfully) and stupid mistakes arising from anxiety during this stressful application time is something I can’t really afford!

Hi!

As ss29 said, I wouldn’t worry ? Just ensure you had a receipt/proof of ordering the transcript after following up and ensuring they received it!

It’s high time for anxiety lol - I made a small post about two typos (one volunteering date; one employment date) I wrote in my supplemental application which I noticed AFTER submitting *slaps forehead* Emailed UBC Nursing admissions to let them know.

SAME! I made a mistake... I meant to type June 2019 for my grad date from SFU, but I accidentally put in 2018 omg. I emailed Ruxandra and she mentioned that she cannot change anything on supplemental. You'll probably get the same reply, so let's just hope it doesn't affect our admission.

Thank you! This makes me feel much better!

I called my school today and ordered another one couriered over in desperation but they likely won't send it until tomorrow anyway (Feb1 post date).

I'll make sure I have the original receipt on file to send over if the don't update in the next few weeks.

Haha yeah I got the same reply!!

I told her that I am aware we can’t change anything and wanted to let her know. I also asked her if small typos (dates or grammar) significantly affect or reduce one’s chances of admission, but who knows if she’ll give me a straight answer? Probably not! I hope we’re not the only applicants with typos lol ?

We can do this.
