UAB AMNP Summer 2009 Class

U.S.A. Alabama

Has anyone out there applied for UAB's AMNP Program that starts in May 2009? If so, has anyone received any information on the status of their application?

Same here...can't wait!

Hopefully this doesn't sound like a silly question, but what do you think would be the best attire for orientation? I heard they may be changing the May 6th orientation to May 7th, but I wish we had the final details already.

Hey guys-

In an effort to keep myself occupied because I work night shift the rest of this week, I googled UAB AMNP to try to find a picture of the first class- which I'm in..and found you guys instead. I see that you had a lot of the same questions I did when I started last May- and the same frustrations with not getting the information fast enough. To answer some- the first class had to buy the PDA (I'm still on the fence on whether I like it) and though they didn't give us any leniency as far as the model... our class has realized that you can load the Nursing Central software (you pay for it in addition to the Palm.. so my guess is you can get it separately) on an iPhone or any other PDA platform. The uniforms (sadly all white) are Landau and special ordered from a local uniform store called LeJoy's (they'll know the style number if you say you are at UAB). I would recommend buying the pants from the cheapest place you can find online.. and if any of you would wear a small women's... I have a pair I never wore. The scrub top will have a UAB insignia tacked on it which is why there is a 'deal' with LeJoy's to do it. UAB Clinical instructors take the footwear guidelines pretty seriously- so all white or 98% white was the shoe standard we were held to- in addition to no athletic shoes. Additionally, you'll have to get two name tags. Some other things if you didn't go to UAB for undergrad- in addition to your name tag, you'll need a photo ID which you can get at the Hill Center as soon as you register for classes... and they'll even punch the namebadge hole it in for you. We had to have our CPR certification with us the first day of class in addition to proof that we had completed the HIPAA online course and the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens by the end of that first week. We also started lab work that first week so we needed a stethoscope in addition to a lab pack which they'll sell to you that first day. The only other additional cost outside of books that I remember is the "clicker" which they'll sell at some point that first week for interactive class participation. As far as books go, as soon as you have your course numbers you can go to the UAB Barnes and Noble bookstore link and find out the titles that you'll need or go to the Snoozy's website. I mainly order mine off the internet because they are cheaper than B & N. But.. I know I haven't answered all your questions- but if you have any ones that you would like me to just reply and I'll try to be as timely as I can while I do my preceptorship during night shift! Good luck everyone! -Rachel

Thanks for all the info Rachel!! Would you be interested in selling any of your books?

Rachel- Thank you so much for taking the time to write that for us!! It is extremely appreciated!!:)

rachel,

thanks for the great info! concerning the footwear, can we opt for a clog style shoe?

you mentioned that the nursing central software could probably be installed on an iphone or any other phone with a pda format. does the pda they “recommend” require any type data package in order to operate? if it does, i will go the iphone route! if it doesn’t, i will get the pda and keep my current phone….trying to make the $$ stretch as far as possible!

any survival tips? i know the program will be intense! also, have they given the first class any insight into how the residency program will work.

thanks again for all the info.

bama and polska,

Were you guys able to register? I'm on Blazernet right now and I could only register for 612 and 614.

I have to wait until Noon to register but I wonder why they won't let you register for all the courses! I will definitely let you know what happens.

I have to wait until 3PM to register. I will let you know what happens.

Rachel-

Do you mind telling me what model your PDA had to be?

I also am unable to register for any classes besides 612 and 614.

We have to have medical clearance before we can register for the clinical courses. I sent the office an email asking if we could go ahead an register even if we have not received the official acceptance letter. She advised me that we have to have medical clearance. Since the system lets you register for 612 and 614, it must be a requirement for the clinical courses only.
