Uab- amnp how many accepted each year?

U.S.A. Alabama

I see many of you all got accepted into the AMNP program this year at UAB. Congratulations to you all! I'm curious if any of you know approximately how many are taken each year and how many apply? I've heard as many as 300 apply but only 60 get in. I've also heard only approximately 120 apply and 50 get in. I really want to get into the program for 2012 and I was just curious what I was up against. If anyone knows, I'd love to know. Thank you! :)

Wow, thanks for sharing that! i'm currently living in CA and going to school here. but i'm planning on going to nursing at AL. As for the pre-requisites, I'm going to have a call appointment with my advisor to let her determine which courses I still need to take before eligible for applying 2nd bachelor/AMNP. I took some of them already here. But it seems to me there are as many as 60 units of pre-requisites required by UAB?? Did you take single each one of them except one in VA? Or you had to talk with your advisor explaining certain potential courses you do not need to take. sorry so many questions. appreciate your help : ) p.s. international student

Does anyone know if you have to have your BS before the deadline to apply for Spring 2012 or if you can have it finished before the program starts? I know that the 2011 program started in May this year, I am wondering if May is considered spring or if it will start in Jan. Just trying to plan. Really want to apply.

Spoke to someone in charge and she said the 2012 program starts Jan 9. I think that will put me out of the running. Guess I will have to wait until 2013. :crying2: Wish everyone who is applying for 2012 the best!!

@int135 I had already taken math, statistics, english, and intro psych. in undergrad and took all of the other prereqs in VA. I don't think there's that many prerequisites. Here's the link to the AMNP fact sheet: http://www.uab.edu/nursing/images/stories/info_sa/amnp_fact_sheet.pdf You only need the second Chemistry if you take Micro at UAB. So that's only 28 credit hours without the second chemistry and 32 with. I didn't really talk to my advisor about the prerequisites because I had already completed all of them so he just confirmed that I had everything I needed.

@newhope2009 I'm sorry you can't apply! The time will go by fast though and maybe you can get some experience while you wait!

BKC you have so much information! Thanks for posting all this helpful info. :)

I do have question and am wondering if you know the answer to it. My friend and I are looking to apply this month to AMNP for the spring and we both went to an informational meeting about the GPA. We were told they look at overall GPA and has to be a 3.0 but then another gilr told us that they would look at overall GPA OR the last 60 hours of college coursework including the pre-reqs in those 60 hours. It would be wonderful if they only looked at last 60 hours, my overall GPA is barely there haha! :)

Do you know if they look at overall or last 60 hours or if they look at overall only?

I'm excited about the program in the spring! I hope I can get in haha! :)

lbuac, I'm sorry that I'm just now getting back to you! I completely forgot about the forum! Did you and your friend apply to the program? If so, have you found out if you've been accepted? I know that the deadline to apply was this month, but I wasn't sure when everyone would be notified.

BKC, yes I applied and got an email for an interview last week! So excited but nervous! I want in the program so badly! Do you have any ideas about what they ask in the interview? I wonder how many get interviews this time and how many they will accept? So very excited :)

Be ready to explain why you are changing to the field of nursing, what your plans for the future are. This program is very fast paced and stressful, let them know how you plan on handling this, along with supporting yourself. They feel you do not/can not work to finish this program (from the mouth of a friend who is one of the main instructors). I have been privileged to talk/work with many as students on my floor. They really like the program, but also agreed with her statement, if you want to do very well. Also, a friend who just finished her BS in psychology is planning on going this route, my faculty friend asked her those questions also.

I would have these answers below ready also, it is from the applyyourself.com area, which if you have applied will recognize..

From your own personal experience, explain your understanding of nursing, and why the nursing profession and the AMNP program is a good fit for you. Outline your nursing career goals. Describe your interest in the Clinical Nurse Leader track or one of the other master's specialty options.

Mel, thank you so much for the info! I definitely brushed up on these topics in my essay, but I have re-read my essay and went over my resume so I can go into specifics. I have questions that I'm practicing with as well - kind of a mock interview. Do you know how long the interviews last? Are you currently in the program? I am currently interested in the CNL route.

Have no idea how long the interview, not in the program, am in the RN-BSN-MSN mobility track with hopes to get into the pmhnp track starting Spr 2012. I just happen to have worked with a few of the faculty that have courses and do clinicals with the programs. But it does not give me any edge at all. unfortunately.

How strict are they about GRE scores? Thanks guys =]
