UA MEPN 2018

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hey everyone! I know the application deadline is a ways off, but I just wanted to get a forum started for those of us who plan on applying to the MEPN program for 2018! I have all my prerequisites finished and just have to take the HESI. I already took the TEAS for some other schools and scored very well, so I'm not too concerned about HESI as I hear it is a much easier exam without any science content required by UA. Has anyone already taken it? What did you think and how did you prepare? My last 60 units GPA is a 3.80 and my prerequisite GPA is a 3.96. I'm a little nervous about the interview as I have heard in the past it is very short- about ten minutes of talking time. I'll have to figure out how to eloquently but succinctly express my preparation for nursing school and interest in the field. Good luck everyone!!

I didn't make an appointment I just dropped in - you probably won't have to wait, only one person in their sign up sheet had an appointment so I think you will get in and out fast

Has anyone gotten the link for the webinar? I've been checking my email and I still have not seen anything.

There is a link in the email they sent out that announces the webinar. I received in on March 16th. Hope this helps (:

I just checked the graduate college webpage and found that I have been admitted!

Congratulations!!! When did they confirm that you had been recommended by the college of nursing? I'm anxiously waiting.

I didn't receive an email confirmation, I just decided to visit the webpage and found that I had been admitted. I had to accept the admittance on that webpage as well.

So my drug test came back and I talked to the MRO and they said that the MMJ card cannot be used as a prescription, like the Program Coordinator said, so they were not able to clear my drug test so it has to be sent to the UofA as postive with a note that I "claim" to use it for medicinal use.... I am going to the Nursing College tomorrow and I'm going to have an in-person meeting with any available advisor and try and get some real answers about all of this...

I'm so sorry! Keep us posted. If my husband has time to research the issue tonight I can have him email you some talking points if you'd like to give me your email address.

Once you finish the program, can you apply for your np license?

No. You need to apply for and complete the separate DNP program (following successful completion of the MEPN) to become a NP.

azpaaz,

I asked my husband to do a quick search of the law here's what he said (sorry if it's a bit long I just copied and pasted his email to me,

Hey babe,

Here's the research you asked for:

ARS 36-2813 – Discrimination Prohibited

No School may refuse to enroll . . . and may not otherwise penalize a person solely for his status as a cardholder unless failing to do so would cause the school . . . to lose a monetary or licensing related benefit under federal law or regulations.

ARS 36-2812(B)

A registered qualifying patient . . . is not subject to arrest, prosecution or penalty in any manner, or denial of any right or privilege . . .

ARS 36-2812(A)

There is a presumption that a qualifying patient . . . is engaged in the medical use of marijuana pursuant to this chapter. The presumption exists if the qualifying patient . . . is in possession of a registry identification card.

Based on these statutes, unless the school would affirmatively lose federal funding or licensing, it seems that they cannot block enrollment.

As seen in the attachment, Marijuana must be deemed the same as any other prescribed medication under Arizona law. It is not deemed the same under federal law.

A university may not prohibit the possession of marijuana on the campus for a medical marijuana cardholder, but they can prohibit the use of marijuana on campus: State v. Maestas, 394 P.3d 21 (Ariz. App., 2017)

Unfortunately, there is not enough law built up yet to really go beyond this kind of analysis. I would say that the statute plainly prohibits the school from denying enrollment UNLESS the school can prove that the particular enrollment of a student with some trace of THC would require the school to lose funding or licensing. Neither of which I believe would be the case. But I have not researched it that far.

That burden of proof though, would be a very tough burden for the school to pass, in my opinion.

Me

I'm not in UA's program but at ASU for nursing school the drug test is mostly screened by the clinical placement sites. Therefore it may be the hospitals that UA works with that really determine the policy. I'm not too sure what the law is associated with working as a nurse and being a medical marijuana card holder.
