U of Maryland

U.S.A. Maryland

Hello all. I'm currently finishing up my prereqs. I'm applying to UMaryland in the fall. UMD is definately my first choice because I am looking for a second bachelors program and an affordable school. I noticed a couple of you are going there or are alumni. I know its competitive to get in, but I'm just curious as to how competitive. My GPA is a 4.0 so far for my prereqs. and I did well with my first bachelors (3.38). I'm just worried about waiting lists and such. So I guess my question is...what are there standards? What are they looking for overall? I went to an information session and they gave me the min. GPA requirements. I just wanted to get some info. from anyone who has been through the application process with them.

Good luck to everyone who is getting ready to begin their nursing programs! :D

THanks bigmona, I am currently taking prereqs at montgomery college also. I heard about thier wonderful program. I have also heard of several people being turned away. That is what bothers me. My first choice is University of Maryland-Shady Grove after I complete chemistry at MC. Who did you take A&P with?

are you trying to do a BSN or ADN program? you probably want BSN since you already are obtaining a degree. I'm taking classes at Montgomery College and they have a nursing program that's pretty good.

http://www.mbon.org/main.php?v=norm&p=0&c=education/index.html

that's the maryland board of nursing website, which has links to all approved nursing programs in the state of Maryland.

I am working on a BSN as first choice once I have completed my prereqs.

I took A&P with professor Jenkins at Takoma Park. She was the most amazing teacher and REALLY knew her stuff. She taught the class extremely well. Unfortunately she's out this semester and I don't know when she will be back.

MC has a good program and they admit solely on GPA. So you can have all "fluff" classes on your transcript with a 4.0 GPA and be admitted, but someone with a lower GPA who has already taken a&p, micro, etc may not be admitted. It's a screwed up way to do the admissions and I heard recently that they're thinking of re-evaluating their admissions methods.

I have also heard that UMB shady grove is the same as UMB in baltimore - they have Shady Grove info sessions that you should attend. You can find out what's coming up at http://nursing.umaryland.edu

Hello!

I am new to this discussion and as you might guess I have plenty of questions. Actually, I am very excited to see this forum since I am also planning in pursuing a second degree in Nursing. Following some of the discussion so far, I got some pretty good idea about UMB nursing program. UMB is on first place of my lists of schools since it is affordable and offers an academically strong nursing program.

Well,I am getting my BA in Psychology this summer (only 3 classes left). However, my carrer plans are definitely oriented towards nursing. Now the worst part is that my curriculum didn't include any of the natural and physical sciences. I have taken only one biology class but it was without LAB so I will have to catch up on that as well.I see that most of the people in this discussion had to complete their pre-req at another school before applying to the nursing program. Where did you guys get these classes. I was thinking about Montgomery college but I wasn't sure if the credits will transfer easily. Could someone please let me know in greater detail about these pre-req classes. I guess I have to complete one Chemistry, one BIology, 2 Human Antomy and Physiology, Microbiology and Nutrition. Is that correct? Any help is highly appreciated.

Thank you!

I also have a BA in Psychology. I chose to do an ADN program because of money and flexibility(I am in an evening/weekend program). The prereqs I needed were A&P I and II, Micro, Nutrition and Chemistry for BSN programs. Most likely you will have no problems transferring credits in Maryland. You can PM me if you have other questions. Good Luck.

I also got my BA in psychology and didn't take many of the science pre-reqs. I took all the pre-reqs I needed at Montgomery College (Takoma Park campus). The credits transfer with absolutely no problem. If you have questions about which classes you specifically need, just call UMB and they'll tell you the exact course number of the class that would transfer from Montgomery College. For example, you'll need CHEM101 with lab rather than CHEM100, since CHEM100 is an introductory chemistry class, and CHEM101 is Principles of College Chemistry.

The UMB website lists which classes you need as pre-reqs - there are some classes in addition to the ones you listed above, such as Intro to Sociology. UMB will allow you to CLEP some of these courses (as I did with sociology) and that would transfer as course credit to UMB as well.

Let me know if you have any more questions - especially if you plan to take some of your sciences at MC takoma park. I can tell you which teachers to seek out and which to avoid.

Thank you so much for the reply. It was very helpful. Actually, I live in Silver Spring by th emetro station so I was hoping I can sign up for classes at MC Tacoma campus. I have some of the pre-rec already completed. The only ones I am missing are CHE, BIO, A&P and Microbiology. Did you have to apply to MC like a regular student to take the classes or you can just register? Just curious? I guess I hate to go through the process of applying and all the paperwork.Which classes did you take at MC?

Thank you

PS I really appreciate your help

You have to apply for admissions to the school. It's not a big deal - just go to the MC website and you can find what you need under "prospective students". I think you pay a $20 fee and then you can register once they process the paperwork. You may need to send them a transcript of your previous college work.

I took Chem, A&P 1 and 2, Micro, and Nutrition at MC. The classes for this coming fall may all be full by now. I'm not sure. I know you'll need Chem and Bio before you can register for A&P and Micro.

Great! Thanks for the info.

Do you know if you can CLEP CHEM and BIO?
