U of Maryland

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

Hello all. I'm currently finishing up my prereqs. I'm applying to UMaryland in the fall. UMD is definately my first choice because I am looking for a second bachelors program and an affordable school. I noticed a couple of you are going there or are alumni. I know its competitive to get in, but I'm just curious as to how competitive. My GPA is a 4.0 so far for my prereqs. and I did well with my first bachelors (3.38). I'm just worried about waiting lists and such. So I guess my question is...what are there standards? What are they looking for overall? I went to an information session and they gave me the min. GPA requirements. I just wanted to get some info. from anyone who has been through the application process with them.

Good luck to everyone who is getting ready to begin their nursing programs! :D

I agree with usameije. Univ of Maryland is a great school. I am preparing to graduate from there soon with a BSN and have received a great education. It was flexible enough for me to take online classes which was important to me since I am married with a family. I can't remember how long it took for me to hear back from them about my application when I first applied. I do remember the folks at the School of Nursing were very helpful about answering my questions about my application, etc.

still waiting to hear back about their decision... i did get a letter from them saying that i qualified for in-state status tuition for the fall 2004 semester in the nursing program, which confused me- do they just send this to everyone before they get accepted/rejected?

i'm glad to hear such positive things about the school. the labs sound amazing!

can I just say that UMD is torturing me? I *still* haven't heard back yet about a decision- they said I should hear this week. However, yesterday I did receive something from the student housing people- one was a flyer for the student housing fair coming up and another was a letter from the new student apartment building saying "congratulations and welcome" telling me about the new high-rise building they're opening in august for students at UMD Baltimore. ahhhh! if they sent all this info to me and I don't get in, it would be a cruel cruel joke.

hmmm...that is weird that they sent you info on housing. Maybe it is a good sign! Hang in there! You will know soon. Keep us posted. :)

I wish I could tell you what this means, but I haven't applied yet, so I don't know how they usually handle it.

I GOT IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Am I the most impatient person alive, or what????? I got home today and there was a big envelope waiting for me and I'm IN THE ACCELERATED PROGRAM!!!!!!!! I started crying out of happiness because this is the first good thing to happen to me in a while - my bf's brother died 1 week and 6 days ago and there's been so much drama in my family lately and my job sucks but it'll be okay because I GOT IN.

I AM SO FREAKING HAPPY.

You must be so relieved. Hopefully I'll be seeing you there in the spring of 2005 :)

Now go shout it from the rooftops!

thanks! yes, hopefully I'll see you then!

Is there someone who went to UMD or goes there now who I can PM with some questions?

I graduated from UMB last spring. I am not suprised they lost your transcripts. It's a good school, but the administration is often very disorganized. They lost my scholarship from day one and it took a month for them to find it. In the meantime I had to pay, and you can imagine how long it took to get my money back. A lot of people had trouble with the administrative parts. I sure hope they got things in order by now. With all the letters we wrote and a new dean, hopefully they have gotten it together.

I did get a scholarship from the school...I had a 4.0 on my first degree and a 4.0 on my prereqs. It was for $1K and I had to maintain a 3.5. NOT easy with a family, but doable. I got the state grant also, which wasn't a lot. but every bit helps and it's payable.

I had applied early, was accepted in April. I actually called my contact person and she told me over the phone before I got the letter.

But don't be surprised if some of your clinicals are changed at the last minute...in our last semester, there were two community clinical groups that had no site. They met at the instructor's house. Our group was booted during one section of our clinical because they decided they didn't want students anymore. We were told the day before where our clinicals would be for some of them.

I talked to students and Hopkins and they said they had a lot of trouble as well. Glad I didn't go to Hopkins, I'd have had pretty much the same education and been $40K in debt.

Don't get me wrong, I don't regret going there. You just have to be very proactive and assertive to get what you need sometimes. It's good preparation for hospital nursing.

Congrats bigmona! I could relate to your messages. I have a I too am waiting to hear from UMAB on whether I have been accepted into the accelerated program and I agree this is torture. I sent my stuff in around December 22, 2003 only to get a letter saying a transcript was missing but I took care of that right away. Got a letter saying my application was complete and has been forwarded on to the admission committee for review. Then I got a letter granting me in-state classification. So now I am just waiting. I am hoping it comes soon cuz I can't take this any longer. I have also applied to JHU SON accelerated program.

Anyway congrats!!

good luck dstnurse! i mailed my stuff in early january and they received my application on jan. 13th. i received all the same letters you did - it took about a month until i got the letter that it was "complete" and forwarded to the admissions committee. that was after two transcript mix-ups. heard back on march 5. hopefully you will hear something soon as well!

Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering were all classes for the program offered during the day(I'm married with children)? What were clinicals like? I mean what was expected of you and how early did they usually start? Thanks

studentrn-

95% of the classes there are during the day. Pharm, which you take your first semester, was 6-9 Monday nights, but this semester I heard it's 5-8 Monday night. I know one girl who's taking a 5 pm class this semester, but it was just one section among many that were available. I take that class at 2 pm.

The first semester you'll be there 4 or 5 days a week ending between 12 and 5 each day, except for Monday when you have Pharm. Second semester varies a bit more, depending on what clinicals you take. I'm taking OB/Peds and Psych clinicals right now. Psych is a 9 hour clinical once a week, and OB and Peds (taken for 1/2 semester each) are either two 7-hour days or one 12-hour day each week plus lecture time.

There are lots of parents in the program, single and married. PM me if you want more info.
