what are the instances where you wish you never took nursing?...just curious...:typing
In July 1996 I took care of a pediatric full arrest where the child had been beaten to death over a 90 minute period. Truly wish I wasn't a nurse that day.
OMG. That is so unimaginably horrid. God bless that little baby. I honestly don't know if I could have contined in nursing had I seen that. I had a really difficult time with peds in nsg school. I just could not cope well with seeing sick and dying children. God bless pediatric nurses.
Nurses who have gotten into this career because they bought the idea that you can make lots of money and work any shift that will work with their situation. Then, when they actually take a job and find out they bought a bunch of sales talk, actually ask for OT for the money and then get cynical because nursing is not a nice profession and they are tired.
It demands commitment that has to come from within. Some nurses do not seem to have that.
Sometimes these nurses remind me of a person who buys a used car and does not expect any problems.

I dislike nursing management that does not address issues in a timely manner, that is clueless in the area of proactive management (they typically have lots of experience in crisis management), that is not consistent in enforcement of policies when it comes to nurses, and does not back their nurses. I do not like the mound of non-nursing clerical/bookkeeping duties that have been heaped on us because admin wants to cut back on unit secretaries and registration officers. I do not like having to spend more time with paperwork and a computer than I do providing patient care.
There are a lot more things I like about nursing and most days I leave work knowing I have made a difference. I've learned to avoid admin as much as possible and pick my battles. Striving to be a good nurse and co-worker helps me to keep my focus on what is important and put everything that is a negative/distraction out of my mind.
