Hello,
This is for anyone who has applied to the Degree Holder Route at U of C. I just wanted to let people know that if they have transcripts that still haven't been ordered from an Alberta Institution (through ApplyAlberta), give the admissions office a call (403-210-7625) and have them request it to be sent.
I was checking myuc everyday waiting to see if my transcript from Athabasca had been ordered and it still hadn't. I called admissions and the man told me he had to put a request for it to be ordered from Athabasca.... good thing I called or else they might not have ordered it in time for the Sept 30 deadline!
ucalgary nursing student here. i know you're all excited to become nursing students at uofc but please hear my two cents
if you didn't know already the way the program is designed is by population it level. it goes like this
YEAR 2
COMMUNITY
FAMILY
YEAR 3
ACUTE CARE
ACUTE CARE (CHRONIC)
YEAR 4
INDIVIDUAL OPTIONS
FINAL FOCUS (WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE)
the fun actually starts in third year. 2nd year was a total breeze but since it is it has its weaknesses.
when i did year 2 (fall 2013 - winter 2014) it was literally easy. the labs were boring and despite consistent required reading, you can actually get by by just taking lecture notes. i had no issues with nursing or the program until third year. third year is where everyone started dropping out or fail. it's not so much because students are lazy but rather everyone feels that almost all of nursing skills and knowledge is condensed in third year. it's really stupid how the program is organized in such a way but since it is arranged in a population level it makes logical sense going from broad population to specific. saying that, a lot of people feel very inadequately prepared. i'm telling you everyone agrees that the learning curve is so damn steep from year 2 to 3 that it does the students disservice. the **** you learn won't start to make sense until you're actually in third year (from my experience)
i've actually managed to say it right to one of the professor's face (how weak the program is) and she even admitted this. too bad i don't think she or the whole admin cares enough that they're actually addressing the weakness of the school's program.
my bottomline here, uofc's nursing program is really mediocre as they don't prepare students enough to transition from community+family into acute care. i even asked many 4th year students and believe it when i say that a majority don't feel ready to be on their own to practice. i can't speak for other schools but please for anyone who is considering this school do your research on certain universities before you make a very expensive mistake or regret.
