what type of group is AA?

hi quick question, what type of group is AA? like in the lines of mental health class, I really don't know what type of group it is, I googled it, and looked up AA websites, they don't say what type of group it is, thank you very much!

Do you get to attend a meeting? Going to the AA meeting was one of my favorite psych rotations
