TWU Weekend Program Spring 2010 in Dallas

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Have been on several threads discussing various Spring 2010 students. This one is specifically for people in the weekend program to help share information about the program and what is going on with the process. I have been accepted and have confirmed with TWU. Waiting to hear about packet which has not arrived yet. Any and all welcome.

there was an e-mail sent today with the immunizations which are needed. if anyone is looking for inexpensive immunizations you can try administration office: tarrant county public health main campus 1101 s. main street, fort worth, tx 76104 · 817-321-4700

i talked to a representative that you can get shots for $10/shot. if you need the hep b. they are able to do a combination of hep a and b that has a series of two or three shots within a 30 day period with a booster 1 year later. again $10 per shot.

if also appears that we register at the orientation. is that what others read?

a little more info for those taking care of immunizations through tarrant county.

tb skin test is $20. varicella titer is $41. cash or check only.

the main campus only gives adult immunizations for immigration purposes. you will have to go to one of the branch locations for anything besides tb. check the website jakktwo posted...it has service locations and contact info. definately call before you go. they have a set number of immunizations the individual locations can provide each day. i got my tb skin test done but had to go back for the varicella titer because they had reached their daily quota. on the tb skin test, you will get a "shot" then have to return about 2 days later to have it read. be prepared to wait.

The initial numbers I had was $10 per adult shot but that was wrong. It is $20 and if you get combination like HepA and B $40 for each round.

Hey it was nice to meet everyone, enjoy some food, and pee in a cup together! Fun way to start the bonding! Going to enjoy the next few weeks off, but kinda excited to get into the groove of things!

Hi-I just joined this group-great for sharing/gathering information. I was at the Dec. 9 orientation also. I was wondering if anyone has bought the books, uniforms, stethoscope and has found a place to take CPR? I bought new books at Amazon.com for $340, no shipping and no tax. Not for everyone, but I didn't want to spend time shopping around too much. I was looking online to get pricing on TWU uniforms and a stethoscope. I am still looking for a place to take my CPR class. Going to try in Denton because that's where I live. Please post info about what you guys are doing and if you found better prices in one place. That would be very helpful. I bought my books first because I feel better about getting a head-start on reading. It looks like a tough semester at least for me. I have finished most of my immunizations. I still need 2nd and 3rd doses of Hep B. I got most of them at my Dr.'s office-$30 copay. Got titers at TWU Student Health Center -$115, and an MMR at the Denton County Health Dept. -$20. It still has not been posted on Pioneer Portal, though, so I called the TWU immunization office who confirmed they received the forms I had sent in late November. Good luck to you all and hope to hear from you soon.

Which books do we need for Pharmacology and the other first semester classes? I missed orientation.

You missed plenty if you didn't show up for orientation. Here it is:

1. Pharmacology for Nurses: A Pathophysiological Approach, 2nd Ed.; MP Adams, LN Holland

2. Pharmacology for Nurses: A Pathophysiological Approach (Workbook 2nd Ed); MP Adams, LN Holland

3. Pathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adults and Children, 5th Ed; KL McCance, SE Huether

4. Study Guide and Workbook for Pathophysiology: The Biological Basis for Disease in Adults and Children, 5th Ed; KL McCance, SE Huether.

5. Assessment Skills Laboratory Manual for Health and Physical Assessment in Nursing; EF Corbin, D D'Amico, C Barbarito

6. Health and Physical Assessment in Nursing; D D'Amico, C Barbarito

7. Clinical Handbook for Heath and Physical Assessment in Nursing; D D'Amico, C Barbarito

You also need to buy Nursing uniforms and a stethoscope (at Majors Books- 2137 Butler St., Dallas, TX 75235) accross the street from UT Southwestern and Parkland Hospita)l. They can probably give you help with those things and the books.

You also need to get CPR certified by taking the BLS (for Healthcare Providers class) course. You can find where they are given by looking at the website for the American Heart Association.

We took a drug test at orientation and registered for classes. Nursing Assessment labs will be either in the morning or afternoon on Sat.

Hope that helps.

Greetings All,

Does anyone mind posting the ISBN's for the books, trying to get them off of amazon? Really appreciate it :)

thanks chococat17. i seemed to have dropped the sheet they gave us at the orientation. thanks again !

The sheet they gave us at orientation didn't have the ISBN numbers, so it was helpful to those of us who were there, too. Thanks chococat17! Not to take sides or anything, but check www.barnesandnoble.com. I'm not sure how long it lasts, but everyone gets the 40% member discount. The pharm textbook is cheaper and the pharm workbook is the same price. The Assessment books are sold separately, but come out cheaper in the end. Didn't look at shipping as that may be a factor since Amazon was running free shipping. Anyone know how much they are running at Majors? Their website doesn't list books. I haven't checked prices on software anywhere else yet.

By the way, chococat17, they should just take your last three posts and make them part of the orientation packet. They'd save about an hour! How novel, a list of everything we need before January 22. You're a GENIUS!!!

thanks waterchickvick. has anyone gotten their uniforms? does anyone know how much that will cost? i think i read earlier on this thread or another that will run ~$100-200. i am planning on heading to majors today ~4pm and will let you know how its goes.

i just got my cpr certification (bls for healthcare providers) yesterday and it was a workout. we had to practice and test on plastic mannequins. it went well and i am glad i got it over with. i found this class through the american heart association website. it was in a long-term care facility in lewisville (i live in denton) and it cost me $65. i just read on another thread that there was supposed to be one given for the students in jan. does anyone have any info. on that? i don't remember this being announced during orientation.

I went to scrubs etc today (on Medical Ave and stemmons) Very close to Campus. I got an Urbane scrub shirt and pants for $42.
