Aaaaalriiighty! With the large volume of nursing students who applied for TWU this Fall semester and the very few amount of drop outs, it's time to start up the Spring 2017 applicants forum topic!! I'm one of the waitlisters who didn't make it into the Fall 2016 Dallas nursing program, but definitely had competitive scores.

For reference I had a GPA of 3.86 (3.68 nursing core) and a TEAS score of an 87 (top 3%). That left me with a total of 47.7 points (43.83 for Spring 2017, but I'll explain).

Now keep in mind that this semester TWU will no longer be looking at cumulative GPAs, but only the nursing core GPA. Other than that, the change in the Program Materials on the Nursing CAS application, and that you don't need to send a transcript to NursingCAS, there have been no major changes to note for the Spring 2017 semester.

Also, to those who either scored less than me or have a lower GPA don't let that discourage you. Last application cycle was a weird one with close to triple the amount of Honor's students (HS=guaranteed acceptance) and an unusually low declination return. Last Spring, the lowest accepted student had about 43.1 points. Which equates to about a 3.6 GPA and an 82-85 TEAS. If you can hit that ballpark you're in a good spot. Also, since there was such a high percentage of HS for Fall 2016 it's likely that there will be a much lower HS Spring turnout.

Stats for the Fall 2016 accepted students

Dallas lowest accepted: 51.1pts (40 HS)

Houston lowest accepted: 35pts

Now be advised that there is a full 20 points given to any TWU student with 32+ credit hours. That means if you're a TWU student with 32+ you've got great chances. Now for you transfer students (such as myself), I advise studying your tail end off for that TEAS in order to be competitive. It's not impossible, but it is improbable if you don't produce excellent returns.

Let me know if you have any questions about the application process or how the point system works and I'll be glad to answer. I spent hours researching and talking with advisors, so I've gotta lot of slick info in my book. Also, I'll probably post the actual calculator excel spreadsheet they use for calculating points later, so you can play around with it.

Is anyone planning on getting their CNA certification? I understand that it's not required, but I am wondering if it'll be helpful once summer rolls around and we're looking for jobs....? Thoughts?

That is an interesting thought. I personally would not even know how to go about it...

Idk where you're located, but there are a ton of locations around the DFW area that offer the training. Another program I applied to requires you have it before starting their program, that's the only reason I am familiar with it. Just google "CNA classes in 'your location'" and you should be able to find something. Most classes are 4-8 weeks and require 40 or so clinical hours before taking the certification test. I've heard it's really helpful to have for nursing school, too.

You're CNA certified after your first semester of nursing school.

Really??? That's awesome. How'd you find that out? I've never seen that advertised anywhere on their site, or on past threads. Glad I didn't go and pay $700 for a class, if that's the case.

You're CNA certified after your first semester of nursing school.

Actually, I just called to confirm, and that is incorrect. You are not certified after your first semester, and you have to do it on your own if you want to become certified.

From my understanding, you don't necessarily need a CNA to work as a patient care tech over the summer. I believe you're good as long as you have one year of nursing school finished and plan to continue in tour program. At least, I'm sure that's the case at Children's Hospital.

Has anyone heard anything? I'm getting anxious. The bad thing is we have to wait for a letter or an email instead of just looking at our application online! ugh!

It will be an email and it shouldn't be too much longer!!! I bet by the 23rd at latest!!!

I hope so! I have been trying to keep myself occupied, but it's hard not to think about it!

It's officially been a month since application deadline!!!! Eeeeeeekkk! I bet we find out last week of September or first week of October!

When I saw the notification that someone posted on here, I thought to myself - OMGOSH someone must have received some news LOL. I am very excited to know. I hope I get in. TWU is a great program!
