TWU Houston FNP Fall 2017

Published

Well, I just found out I got accepted to TWU's FNP program for fall 2017! Is there anyone that has insight into what the program is like? My concerns are about finding clinical sites and managing workload with working. I've heard about people panicking about finding clinical sites.. Has anyone ever NOT been able to progress in the program because of this? I went to TWU for my BSN and loved it, but wasn't working at the time and I've heard the MSN program can be just as rigorous. Any insight would be helpful!

I'm in the Denton program and they are now finding us clinical sites. Hopefully it's the same in Houston! Once you sit down and talk with the program coordinator they will help you figure out a degree plan that works for you, including part time, and very slow part time. Good luck, and congrats!

Congrats, Lins! I applied this past week, sent my transcripts, and I'm taking the GRE at the end of March. When did you apply? The deadline for Fall 2017 is May 1 so I'm surprised to see that you have your acceptance this early. That's awesome and I'm sure it relieves some stress. Fingers crossed for my application :cat:

Thanks for the replies! That's good to know. I'll have to sit down and talk to someone.

I wanted to be able to start in the fall so I applied to UT health and UTMB as well, whose deadlines were really early. TWUs was open then so I figured I'd just do it then also. I was surprised to hear back so quick as well, but I'm glad they're reviewing them as they come so I can plan. May seems like cutting it a little close. Good luck on your app and GRE!

Hi,

I'm in the FNP program at Houston right now. They do not find clinical sites for us. Occasionally GNE will find a preceptor for you but most of the time you are on your own so beware. Your preceptor also has to be approved before you can start clinicals and if they have anything against their license they will most likely be rejected. SOAP notes are very tedious and you have to do a pretty comprehensive one for every hour of clinical. And they will reject them and make you redo them if they are not up to their standards. The beginning classes are not too bad but give you lots of busy work. Advanced Assessment is very difficult and I know of some people who did not pass that class. I also know of someone who switched to UTMB because she was not happy with TWU. I was also told by someone at my job that a friend of his did most of her clinical hours for that one semester at TWU with a preceptor who was approved and then they rejected her based on the faculty site visit which was done in the latter half of the semester so she had to redo all of those hours. It is not an easy program and I have also thought about switching to a different school. But I will say that you do learn a lot but get ready to be overloaded with information and work. I also heard that at UTMB they didn't have to write a full SOAP note like we do for every patient that they see. Anyways good luck to you.

Thanks so much for all of that info! I've been trying to make a decision between TWU and UTMB actually, I got the second acceptance after this post. I've heard good things about UTMB, and I'm leaning towards choosing them just to salvage some of my personal life while in school. It's a hard decision but I think in the end the board pass rates are comparable.

Has anyone taken more than just two classes per semester/is this doable with working? I will start the FNP program in dallas in the fall

Hi! I'm applying for the Denton program this upcoming fall. Can you tell me what it is like ... and how soon do they usually tell you if you are accepted or not?

i'm planning to apply for Spring 2017 and I'm not sure if to take the GRE or MAT. Any insight as to which one to take?

I just got accepted for the TWU NP program for Spring 2018. Has anyone taken just one class at a time? Is this allowed? I have a small daughter and work full-time. Don't want to miss out on too much on her day to day stuff and am in no real rush to graduate...Thanks!

My first year I took one class a semester for summer and fall I took role with patho and that wasn't too bad either. Once you start clinicals it's usually one class a semester but it's harder because you have to deal with clinicals a paper and tests. Good luck.
