Two questions

Waiting for public health to call me back but thought I'd ask here.

1. Elementary student's grandmother diagnosed with mumps. Family has been quaranteed for a week. Student is up to date on MMR. Anything the school nurse needs to do?

2. Old drugs from prior students - how do you dispose of them? It costs $ to use the local pharmacy. Can I do what I do as a hospice nurse? Crush them, put them in a container with coffee grounds and toss in the garbage?

    if student has been vaccinated all along ( meaning didn;t just get vaccinated in response to new illness) then no reason why she should be kept out of school as long as she's asymptomatic

    i try to et the parents to pick up old meds, but sometimes they don't - i typically do what you do - crush / destroy meds and mix with coffee grounds so the animals don't end up taking any unnecessary neurontin.

    I found out that the family over-reacted to the ER doc's advise. There was no dx of mumps as of yet - blood tests and cultures were taken but would not be ready for 3 days.

    Doc did NOT tell them to keep the girl home from school.

    And we can destroy the meds and put them in kitty litter or coffee grounds and throw them away.
