Two Lab Courses at Once

Nursing Students General Students

Hi everyone! I want to know your opinion on taking two science labs at once particularly chemistry and anatomy and phisiology one. I have already taken most of my prerequisites and I just have science classes left, so I want to take both. I've taken Chem four years ago but it wouldn't transfer. These would be the only two classes I'm taking next semester. For some reason, my school is HIGHLY discouraging this. I currently have a 4.0 and this is my second degree and I just want to get these beginning courses done so I can move into nursing courses. I'm wondering why the high level of persuation not to, if they think students can't handle taking two science labs at the same time how do they think they will survive actual NUR classes. Your input and opinion is greatly appreciated!!

Can you do that? Most schools chemistry is a prerequisite to A&P.

Science classes require a lot of time and I think that is why it is discouraged against to take multiple sciences at once.

Any questions feel free to ask :)

Yes, students do it but they have to sign a waiver. I've taken honors chemistry in high school with an a and intro to Chem freshman year of college with an A. So I do have exposure to it. I have a friend who is in a nursing program at a different school and chemistry isn't even a part of their curriculum. I'm going to take both but was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were.

Yeah I understand. If you think you can handle all the content. That's gonna be a lot of studying

For my school we had to take A&P2 and Chemistry with labs at the same time (only scheduled during spring semester). A lot of people see issue with this but when you're not given any other options you just have to accept it. Having gone through that though its not very difficult at all in my opinion, just spend a little on both each day and manage your time well. Those that didn't do well in either, either couldn't repeat the information they learned (A&P) or they just didn't understand the prior concept well enough to progress to the next (Chemistry)

I took A&P I and chemistry together and got an A in both without any issues. If you have time to dedicate to studying, you should do fine.

I can't speak from the perspective of a university, perhaps the curriculum/workload would be more difficult there. However, I'm currently taking A&P2 and gen chem1 this semester along with a psych and history class. Essentially a full load with 2 science classes. If you're a studious person (sounds like you are from the 4.0) and have decent time management (basically just don't procrastinate) then I think it's definitely possible. I'm also single/no kids, living at home, and not working. Currently making A's in both.

I did it and I would've gotten A's in both but ended up with a B+ in micro because I got the flu right before our midterm. Taking micro and AP2 with other classes totaling 19 credits was hard but I still managed.

I did that at a large state university and I never had to sign a waiver, organic chem and a&p 1. It's doable, and still less than the amount of work you'll do in nursing school.

I think it depends on the rest of your schedule. Are you working too? I took A&P I and Microbiology at the same time last year. I was also working full time. I think I about near died but I did it and got an A in both. It just takes a lot of hard work and a strong work ethic. I would get off work at 5:30 and head straight to starbucks to study until 10:00 almost every night or straight to school for class. I allowed myself to have half a day off from studying every week so I could also spend time NOT thinking about school. I think it's totally doable!

Seeing as how you have previous exposure to chemistry, it seems you'll probably have it easier in that class than most people. Should be fine to take both
