Trying to find work as a new LPN - need your experiences to help me out please

Published

So, I graduated and got my LPN license in August 2018. Yep, brand, spanking new! Here's the thing.. Finding a job with no previous experience has been hard. Most want experience! I have tried presenting my clinical experiences as "experience" and in a few cases, this works; however, most are not impressed. Currently, I work at the VA hospital as a nursing assistant. I have applied for an LPN position here - any LPN position here as a matter of fact. I have interviewed with a group from the CLC (community living center) within the VA and am anxiously awaiting their decision. In the interim, I am applying to other facilities outside the VA without much success. Question: Where did you apply as a new LPN and how long did it take you to find meaningful employment?

I am concerned that I won't find anything close by. I have applied to nursing homes as well.

I live in Little Rock, AR. I appreciate your thoughts here. Thanks.

I applied at the SNF I worked at previously as a CNA, but I had a lot of luck on indeed recently when I found a new job. You pretty much need to apply to everything you see that you think you'd be able to do and eventually you'll get hired.

Little Rock pediatric Hosp

You might have to take a position a little farther away, or one that may not be what you want, to get some experience.

Good luck with your search.

I got hired in outpatient dialysis. The pay was less, but it's was fulltime. All of my other offers were part time. It tool about a month before I was hired, but I didn't start work until A couple of weeks after

I was reading your post and you have a very similar story to me. I just got my LPN license in June 2018. I also work as a CNA at a VA hospital, but in TN. My VA just had a job fair last month and I applied for 2 positions. But I did not get them. I'm guessing because I am a brand new nurse. I knew a couple of nurses were leaving on the floor I work on (a community living center) so I went to the outside to get a job and also get experience. I found a nursing home that was willing to hire me. They gave me credit for my CNA experience. So that helped with the pay. I also just found out that I got a job at the VA on the floor that I work on. The only thing is that the VA doesn't pay LPNs as well as the outside world does.

Specializes in retired LTC.

VA is Civil Service!!!

To Liv - from yourpost, it sounds like you should not have any problem with break in employment service so your time should count for something in longevity and pension I think. Also you'd prob qualify for tuition.

To OP - Remember that govenment wheels move really SLOW, so it might take a while for things to move through. There are folk here who post that it's taken quite some time for them to snag that first job. Esp if you're being selective.
