True or False Advice

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

At a recent visit with my chiropractor, I mentioned I've started the pre-reqs for nursing school. Her advice to me was to not worry about how much I retain, just *get the grade* because my real schooling will not begin until I'm actually in nursing school.

So, is this true? I'm fairly good at memorizing terms and concepts long enough to test on it but within a month the majority of it has faded from recollection.....no big deal?

False to a point. English and Technical Writing will help you immensely. Anatomy also will be of benefit so you do need to retain that.

Classes like Western Civilization, Sociology, etc not so much.

o man......some will say your REAL education will begin on the job.Everyone has a theory. Some pre-reqs do seem to be time -wasters but most are not...

False with a capital F! You will continue to hear about the bones during your assessment classes you learned that in A&P, you will have to know about mitosis in meiosis in OB/PEDS nursing, you got that in biology, you will have to know about the Tissues, bones, diseases, pathophisiology of diseases, pretty much everything that you learned in A&P I and II you will (guaranteed) come across it again in MED/SURG. Anything that you learned in your psychology classes you will come across it again in your nursing mental health class, you will come across all types of chemistry again and the list goes on and on and on....I don't understand how someone who is in the medical profession give you that type of advice. Retain what you can in your prereq's because you will come across it again. Oh yeah those art classes and global studies classes I thought were useless they actually challenge you to look at situations from a different perspective and think outside the box as well as teach cultural awarness; they are not a TOTAL waste of time but I think that I could have done without those.

My degree was heavy on the humanities and social sciences. If your chiropractor was talking about your gen ed - non science courses then I agree just focus on the grade. You'll probably remember the big picture and it may be knowledge you'll find useful in some way or another but you don't have to worry about retaining the little details.

just study, i guarantee that your brain is smart and large enough to retain it, and that is using only 1/5th of its power!

plus ap is so cool, i get mad when people say its hard, and they are glad they dont have to take it again, because it is such an awesome class!

I wouldn't listen to him  Why? What if you will decide to pursue your nursing career?

Maybe you will want to get a Master degree? Some of the programs are looking for every grade and overall GPA. You wouldn't be happy about that you can get into program you wish.

...advice from a Chiro - hehe. haha.

no thanks ;)

unless it directly relates directly to my spine..
