Troubled for the NCLEX-RN

Published

I am currently waiting for my ATT from the California Board of Nursing (I was foreign school educated and the Texas Board of Nursing has so many requirements for non-US educated BSN compared to CaBoN) and I'm pretty much stuck with babysitting for my sister's two kids.

I am really worried on how I can maximize my time and resources in preparing for the NCLEX-RN. My sister bought me the KAPLAN NCLEX-RN (Strategies, Practice and Review) 2011-2012 Ed. and as I was reading it, the book doesn't have that much specific content and it only discusses general nursing topics.

Although I try my best to sit-down and read, I often find myself slacking because of babysittting (feeding the baby, changing diapers, and sometimes even just carrying the baby can distract me from reading).

My sister and her husband are nurses too and they work at night. They sleep all day, so that means I'm stuck with my nieces all day and night unless it's their off or they were cancelled as PRNs. Aside from babysitting, I also do some house chores. I just need to get this off my mind that's why I decided to vent out my concerns here in AN.

Have a nice day y'all! :)

Well, it will rely more on your studying techniques and how eager you are to pass this exam. Maybe, if you are quite worried that you can't truly study with your nieces playing/crying around, try to study when they're sleeping and make the most out of your sister's and her husband's off day, where you can at least have more time devoted to your studying. There are some people here who took and passed the exam even if they're working, or even if they have kids to attend to. They just used whatever free time to study and yes more focus and determination from you too. As for me, I tried taking nclex before when I was also working and it didn't do me any good (I failed) as I was working a full time nurse and a part-time accountant (I'm also a BSA undergrad). I will be retaking it on Mar 9, devoting my whole time to studying. Good luck to you! We can do this!

I went sale-snatching at my local Borders before it closed and found Lippincott's Review for the NCLEX-RN. I have not taken NCLEX yet, but I would recommend this book if you can find it, online or maybe at a Barnes and Noble. The entire book is fantastic. Nothing but questions and good rationales as to why or why not for each choice. It's divided into sections (eg, Surgery, upper GI, Lower GI, Repro) as comes with a CD that contains even more questions.

I find I practice best by trial and error, and repetition. If this works for you also then that is a book I would recommend :-)

Saunders has alot of content review. If you have alot of time on your hands you can start with that. Good luck!!

Get them to order the Hurst online review, so on the days when you do not feel like reading, you can watch her videos.......she goes over content and gives you just what you need for NCLEX. It is not just what they want out of this deal, you have to get what you can to, to be satisfied and fulfilled.

I highly recommend the Lippencott Review book. It is chuck full of questions and rationales. It's split up into different content sections and has at least 6 full comprehensive practice tests. I took the NCLEX today and I think it helped me.

Aaww. Thanks guys. Imma look at Lippincott Review book soon.
