Tricks for sleeping on days off

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions about getting some sleep at night on my nights off. I work 7p-7a in an ED, but when I have off I find myself laying in bed staring at the ceiling. Anyone else have this problem? I tried staying up when I get home after a shift, but by the time I get home I'm just too tired. Any suggestions?

I've worked 3rd shift in the past, and I believe the best system is not to try to switch back over to a "normal" schedule on your days off -- it just screws your metabolism and sleep schedule up worse. What I used to do (at the beginning of a few days off) was to go home in the AM and go to bed, but sleep only a few hours (maybe half of the amount I usually would if I were going back to work that night), and then get up. Then, I would stay up late, but not all night -- maybe until 3 or 4 AM or so, and then go to bed. I'd keep that schedule for my days off (unless we're talking about a real vacation, of a week or more).

With that schedule, you are awake part of the day and can do some semi-normal things on your days off, but you're not doing the abrupt shock of trying to switch your schedule completely around, and then switching back abruptly when it's time to go back to work ... That way, you never get into a comfortable "cycle" for when you need to be at work, and you're miserable both at work and on your days off. At least, that was my experience. Best wishes. :)

I also recommend that you do not try to change over each time that you have a day or two off..............you will only cause more wear and tear on your body. Listen to what it is telling you..........

Try to keep to your hours, perhaps not staying up quite all night, but at least until 1 am or so. Don't try to force yourself to go to bed when you are not ready..............
