Triage Help

Nope, not familiar with this one. Can you refresh me on the 5-tier system? I can only think of emergent-urgent-non urgent, and black-red-yellow-green. Maybe it's b/c I'm sleep deprived, hehe.

Hi I am the CLinical Coordinator of a 21 bed ED with apprx 32k visits/yr in VA, and although we do not use a 5 tier system this type of system is the Canadian standard. The following address will give you so good info ... hope it helps. http://www.caep.ca

Our ER uses 5 tier triage as follows: Level One- Critical-Immediate

Level Two- Unstable 5-15minutes, Level Three- Potentially unstable 30-60 minutes, Level Four- Stable 1-2 hours, Level Five-Routine 4 hours.

We also use colors for these Red,blue,green yellow and purple.

The times is RN time to check patient, although we strongly try to see even the stable pt within 10 minutes to introduce ourself. This is not always possible, but we try. I hope this is of some help to you.

We just went to five tier system because that is now JCAHO requirement.

We are not a trauma ER, but we probably use this kind of system, if not on paper then at least in our minds. It is a new JCAHO requirement? Hadn't heard that one.

We follow the 5 tier triage system.

YOu can p.m. me and I will mail you information. It is quite alot of reading.

We all in ER have to take the triage course prior to doing triage.

It is informative.

Ours is a 4 tier triage system- 1= emergent/unstable has to be seen my and MD within 15 minutes, 2= emergent/stable suppose to be seen within an hour, 3= urgent could technically wait 4 hours, and 4= routine we rarely ever use this one, only if someone comes in saying I want a physical or a drug refill etc...these guys are always sent to clinic if in clinic hours, or they wait a long time to be seen in ER.

We use the same 4 tier system as Tara does on the west coast. We just had a JCAHO inspection 2 weeks ago, and they did not mention the 5 tiered system..
