Traveling in the Virgin Islands

Published

I am looking at assignments in the Virgin Islands. I have been offered a contract with Worldwidetravelstaffing. I will be taking my 14year old son with me. I also want to take my two dogs. Small breeds. Does anyone know if this is possible and what is the housing like on the islands. I keep reading about all the crime and am now worried this may not be the assignment for us. I am not worried about the hospital situation due to I am used to having to make do with what I have when treating patients. However, I want this to be a good experience for my son. Do you know of any housing that accepts pets and what is it like for families on the island? Hopefully someone has brought their family along and maybe been allowed to bring pets. Let me know soon. By the way, the contract will be for the start of June through September. I know this is hurricane season but I have read where most say it is not that bad. Please let me know about this too. thanks a bunch.

First thing you should do is research how easy it is to take pets to the VI. Many island countries used to and possibly still do require a quarantine of several months to protect the animals that already live there, whether your pets are vax'd or not. If your pets would be quarantined for the three months you'd be there, is it worth it to take them?

i know that the islands do not require a quarantine. just health records from a vet. not too bad. my pets are my children in a lot of ways. i just could not leave them behind. i have traveled with them for four years and they have done wonderful.

Ahhh. A topic I know a little about. Which VI are you movinig to? Will it be one of the USVI's or one of the Britis VI's. If it's US, then no quarenine.

St. Croix is an absolutely lovely island. Much better to live on than St. Thomas. Less populated and fewer tourist visit there. St. Thomas on the otherhand is very populated, and very dirty.

The majority of St. John is a nature preserve so I wouldn't imagine you'd be moving there.

Housing is not too bad if you're looking at a condo. I believe most condo's do allow pets. You can get a nice one with a view and pool for around $90-$120k, on St. Croix.

Let me know if you are planning to go to St. Croix and I'll fill you in on some tucked away treasures that the tourist don't know about.

Here is a link to St. Croix's webcam overlooking Christiansted Harbor and Frederiksted beach. Lots of other info is here too. http://www.gotostcroix.com/live/
