Traveling with a dog

Published

I am interested in becoming a traveler, but I have a dog and I'm nervous about being able to find short term housing. Anyone have experience with traveling with a dog? Specifically a large breed.

You can find housing, but it can be so tough you may have to give up on some assignments you really want. I'm not trying to discourage you, just know the reality is just like finding housing at a permanent job with a large dog, only much harder. If you need a fenced yard, well you can do the math.

Traveling by RV can be a good solution for some pet owners - RV parks are always pet friendly. That may not work as well for you and a large dog, and would depend how you two relate in a relatively cramped environment.

I've considered that, but the thought of me driving an RV...SCARY!!!!

I traveled with my dog & cat. I looked up "pet friendly short term apartments". Found several but they do charge a pet deposit which is was $300 per pet. I also had to take out renters insurance and show proof to the management but they only cost $18 per month.

I've known many travelers with pets, but every one had to pay a significant pet deposit, as ItalianRN stated. Certain landlords will accept certain animals, regardless of size, for the right price, but a lot of them will only accept small dogs or certain breeds.

I'm on a local travel assignment now. I'm considering getting a camper/5th wheel for my doggo and I to travel in. I have a pitbull, and most mobile home parks don't allow them. However, you can also park in a state park with a permit. And they're less strict. And I'd much rather live at the lake or other state park area than a cramped trailer park any day. Does anyone else worry about someone seeing their dog and trying to steal it while they're away? #anxietyproblems

Did you mean travel trailer park instead of mobile home? I wouldn’t have thought that but I only visit them on occasion and large dogs appear to be common. I also didn’t know dognapping was a thing.
