Housing yourself.......

Im about to take on an assignment very soon as a Travel Nurse and I have done a little research and spoke to a few other travelers and Im still at a little of a loss. Im a young woman who enjoys her freedom and space I dont consider renting a room in some one's house an option. Could someone give me a few cost effective ways to support myself in Housing?

How do you house yourself now?

I rent........

Im brand spanking new to Travel Nursing. Im guessing I didnt make that clear, my apologies. I was hoping experienced RNs could share some cost effective methods I dont know about to get into safe, furnished, properties for short periods at a time.

I take the stipend.

In small towns try HR first. Ask if they can help you find affordable housing. It is amazing how people will help you out if you ask nicely.

Second go to a realtor. Say I have xxx per month. In the off season in resort areas you might get lucky and be offered

a very nice condo provided that you have good credit and can pay one months rent security deposit.

In a big city let the agency set it up. Do not take posession of the housing if it is not clean safe and bug free. Go to a hotel and tell the agency this contract is over if you can not provide housing that is appropriate for a travel nurse.

Check Craigslist for furnished, temp housing. Also check VRBO.com. I've rented from both and gotten nice places.

I am ok with the Candlewood suites and Hilton homewood hotels.

If you have trouble looking for housing, why not just let the agency provide it? Way easier, especially for a first assignment.

I have to agree with Ned (as usual!) I am on my second assignment, my first was short term so the agency set me up with extended stay, which was fine, but for this one I toyed with the idea of finding my own. Ended up going with agency housing, incredible apartment, lots of amenities, super close to my facility and nicely furnished. I may eventually take the stipend and try my own housing, but for the next few, while I learn the ins and outs, I'll go with the agency. You have to let them know what your priorities are up front, you have to map the area around your facility and learn what areas to avoid, then pass that along to them. I will not live in an unsafe or isolated area, and it saves time and grief later, if I research the possible spots and know what I need. Then I talk to housing and they find me someplace that meets my needs. I love this spot, I'll be a bit sad to pack up!

How do you make any money if you don't take the stipend? My hourly pay would be so low without it.

I'm with an agency now that does not provide housing at all, just stipends. I asked them for help finding housing and they gave me a link to Craigslist. Other than that I have no idea where to begin. I'm going to Fresno so there are no resorts or VRBO listings. I'm going to take a chance on Craigslist but I'm kinda nervous. Any other advice?

Well, I moved from Jericho, NY to NYC. For the first month I stayed at a hotel, there are many websites that offer cheap hotel deals if you book for longer, for example Cheap hotels in New York, Find Discount Hotel Rooms / Rates in New York, NY - HotelsCheap.org. For that time I was able to find a small studio apartment where I live alone now. It only has a bedroom and a little living room with a kitchenette but I feel a lot better like that instead of living with an annoying roommate.

I just did a 13 week assignment in Fresno CA at Community Regional. Don't know if that's where you will be or not. I rented a two bedroom furnished condo in the Riverpark Area. Found it on Craigslist. Paid 1300/month all inclusive. Was in a great gated community and 15 minutes from the hospital.

I still have the contact information for the landlord. However, I think it may be rented already started in January through April, but you can PM me for more info and I will check with her to see if the other travel nurse fell through.
