CA RN license question

I have a question I hope someone can help with. I am trying to get my CA license but my issue is that I never had a proper public speaking class. I did have a nursing class that was basically a public speaking class but not in name, and the communications aspect is one of many things listed in the description of the class, so I am concerned they won't accept it. My question is: if i apply and they don't accept it, will i have to pay the $150 again and go through the process? or do they hold your application and give you time to complete the missing requirements? I tried contacting the board, but I was constantly placed on hold, and that's when I was even able to speak to someone. Thanks for any help.

Are you applying for licensure by endorsement? If so, I doubt if they would check into something like that.

California does not require public speaking. I'm not sure if requirements are different for endorsing into California but communications was part of the required curriculum when I went to school in California.

I was misinformed then. I saw on the BON site that 6 semester hours are required from "oral, group, or written" communications. Which would equate to 2 classes in communications from 2 of those 3 categories. Do you happen to know what classes you took to meet the communications needs? In any case I didn't have an actual communications class. I do have my BSN in PA, but communications isn't required here. Thanks for the reply.

Yep. I have my BSN in another state.

If I was at home I could tell you for sure but my communications class was likely 3 semester credits. It certainly was not 6 credits.

It is pointless to worry about it now. Wait until when and if you are rejected. Most US schooled nurses do fine outside of Excelsior (Regents) grads getting licences in California. There are a few other problem schools but I don't know who they are.

Thank You very much, NedRN. I'm just going to submit what I have.

I endorsed into CA almost 2 years ago, and I never took a public speaking course. I recall taking one 3-credit communication course but it was related to media or something. Since you mention "written" perhaps they accepted my freshman writing courses along with that? I had no problems with endorsement and I never attended school in CA.

I looked up my communications class that was required for my California nursing degree and it was four credits. Mind you I took it at a different community college in the summer to meet the entering requirements and the course wasn't just for nursing students (I don't remember that any others in the class) - thus it may have been more than required.

I recently endorsed to CA and I had a course that was listed as SpCom but was actually a course on studying speeches not giving them. It was 3 credits. No problem with endorsing.

I just recently received my CA license by endorsement and the process was delayed by about 1 month because I only sent in my Nursing school transcript. They sent me a letter saying I was missing "social studies" and "oral and written communication" classes and they will hold my application for 1 year until they receive something that meets those. I sent my transcript from my first bachelor's degree (had an english class, and not sure about oral communication, even though we use that every day!), and license was approved a few weeks later. So if they're missing something, they will send you a letter and wait for it. You would not have to pay the $150 fee and apply again.

I also got that letter in the mail. I resent for my transcripts. I do have a question tho. Im worried about the social sciences and oral and written classes. Would developmental pyschology be ok for social science and ENgLISH classes of research, reporting and writing would be considered as oral and written communications?? It is kind of vague the way the board explains it.
