Can anyone recommed any travel nursing companies for a first time traveler? I would like to start off with a short assignment 4 to 8 weeks and then build up. Thanks so much for any responses!

What is your specialty and experience? What are your goals for travel? Experience, money, location? Are you keeping your current employment?

The company that I work for does short term, but it's rapid response. You REALLY have to be ready to go quickly. The money is better, IMO. Nurse Choice.

Specializes in Med-Surg, Step-down and ICU.

Shorter assignments would be more challenging as a traveler it takes a few weeks just to get settled and then to pack up and leave and start over would be even more challenging. You may need to rethink your strategy. I find as a traveler you end up using more out of pocket money moving to a new place and then waiting 1-2 weeks for your first pay check each assignment so you must have some money saved up to really make ends meet. Just my 2cents!!

i agree with tlc365 as a new traveler i would take a 13 week assignment so you have time to adjust. except you have a short assignment close to home. i wouldnt recommend it.

Specializes in ER.

TLC is right on with the gap in pay and travel expenses adding up. If you plan on taking a U-haul, which I did because I took the fam, it'll cost you about 250/each way, gas, lodging, meals, and then grocerys when you get to the new place; not to mention the cost of the place you'll actually be staying while on assignment if you take the stipend and not the provided housing.

AMN is great for first time travelers for placement, but you'll learn a lot and end up switching companies after a couple contracts with them. IMO
