Trauma/ Transplant Patients

Published

Hi, I'm considering working in a busy SICU with lots of traumas and fresh transplants. Could you please share patient cases in this area?

What was going on with the patient?

What were the priorities?

What were the biggest challenges?

Thanks.

I don't really know what you mean there.

What were the priorities?

Get the patient warm, well-perfused, not bleeding, awake, neurologically intact and off the ventilator.

What were the biggest challenges?

As above.

I've had a few liver transplant patients. Labs need to be monitor very frequently. Most often they've had swan caths, have multiple drips, needed multiple blood products and are vented although I've had some come back from OR completely awake and off the vent.

what I'm saying here is: Can you share some examples of pt cases you have had in Trauma/ Transplant ICU? I want to get a feel for what kinds of things I'm going to be seeing in this type of unit. Thanks.

To add, are bone fractures really really common among the traumas? I'm not all that into the traction and stuff.

Yes. A lot of traumatic injuries result in multiple orthopedic injuries. Some people are broken in so many places you'd think they'd never sit up for 6 months.
