Transition to RN

Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

Hello all,

I had taken some time away from Excelsior and nursing in general, but I have started back up and studying my butt off. Over the last 4 weeks I have read both of the recommended texts for Transition to the RN role, as well as reviewing the mystudyguide PDF. I can't figure out how I'm still failing the practice tests. I read the book and everything seems to make sense. I take the practice test and only get 50-55 questions right of the 75. Give me ideas, feedback, study tips, ANYTHING that can get me through these damn question

Well folks, I took the plunge, and I finally took my Transition test today. Yesterday I was in a pit of despair realizing just how much I still had to review. No matter what happy little timeline I made for myself, life gets in the way and sometimes timelines have to be adjusted. I walked away with a B on this exam. As difficult as I found some of the memorization, I actually felt relatively prepared. My downfall on the practice exams were the "select all that apply" questions. One wrong check box and you killed the entire question, I think had about 30 of these questions on this test. Good luck to anyone else who takes this exam.

Great job!! What's next?

If I were a drinking man, I'd say wine was next  but since I'm not... I have no clue. Since transition is technically 108 and foundations is 109 I feel like maybe that is the next logical step? Any recommendations based on what I just studied?

You shoudl do health safety first.

I always recommend doing the exams in order. N104 Health Safety focuses on the Nursing Process & safety which is the cornerstone of all the future exams. The exams seem to be progressively more difficult as they go up in number. The difficulty will also depend on your experience in the subject areas - Medics usually have an easier time with LS1 (Cardiac & Respiratory). Make a note of any item or subject that could be placed in order or have several steps to help to master those pesky SATA questions :)

Congratulations!! Do you have any study tips? Remembering all the theorist and their dates is difficult!!!

Sondon,

Thank you for the congratulations! I'm so happy to finally feel like I'm on my way. As for studying, I honestly threw my outline out the window because I ran out of time and just read straight through the book.

First off, I think my test breakdown was about 100 multiple choice, and 30 select all that apply. The select all that apply can make or break you, one wrong selection and you're toast. I don't think I had a single question that asked me about specific dates. I did have several questions about Roy, Orem, King etc. though.

I would review governing bodies, preceptor/mentor relationships, types of power, legalities, autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence etc., NLN, ANA, QA/QI, critical thinking process, and of course evidence based practice. I know that doesn't really narrow much down, but really I think they gave a few questions from all areas of the outline.

I went through the exams in order, except when I got to the LS series. I was so intimidated and fearful of LS 1 because of the cardiac content, that I skipped it until I completed LS 2 & 3. Ironically and shockingly, I walked out of LS 1 with a B!
