Transferring Credit from Aspen University

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

So I have been researching online schools for what feels like forever. Every time I think I have found a school I want to attend, there seems to be a road block. Currently I am trying to decide between Aspen University and Grand Canyon University. Both offer discounts through my employer. Aspen University is much cheaper, but the fact that they aren't regionally accredited sorta scares me. I talked with a recruiter who said that I should research what schools I would possibly want to transfer to after getting my bachelors, but the problem is that currently I have no idea what area I want to go into after. And I don't want to rush into a masters program. So it's a little hard to do research for future programs and whether they would accept credit from Aspen. Grand Canyon offers a 20% discount to me through my place of employment and has all the good accreditations. Ultimately my question is, are there students out there who have been able to transfer credits from Aspen to other graduate programs? I don't want to get a degree from Aspen and then feel stuck, that I would have to attend their school if I wanted to get a graduate degree. Any help any one could provide I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

PS: I looked in Western Governor's University and they want me to retake a lot of classes such as some science and math classes. No go for me!

Do you market for WGU?
I don't do marketing for any person, place, or entity in existence. I simply enjoyed my 10 months as a student in 's online BSN program. That's all. :)

I am in the process of getting my packet together for the WHNP program. I am getting my letters back, a former instructor who is a NP, my nurse manager for my maternity job, and a coworker with a MSN. I finished my essays, ordered transcripts. I will apply to other programs but this is the one I really want!! I questioned being marketable but if I worked in family practice I would not be following my heart. Is it normal to be more nervous than applying to undergrad nursing school? Best of luck to everyone. If you have any advice please share.

I read your post and the responses that followed with a great deal of interest. Here are my thoughts on the subject. I graduated from Aspen University with a MSN this year - I had an excellent experience and believe I received an excellent education. I decided to continue my education and looked at several DNP programs before making a final decision. None of the DNP programs that I spoke with had any concerns about my degree from Aspen University.

Hope this helps - good luck with your search.

Capella did not require me to take math. I have a lot of science and math and science are under one umbrella at Capella. I only have to take 11 nursing courses.

Don't look strictly at cost per credit hour. Many for profit schools are notorious for requiring students to take an exorbitant number of credit hours to complete a degree program. They make their cost per credit hour rate sound competitive and enticing, but they don't highlight the fact that they require students to complete twice the number of classes as many other universities; that's how they get their money. Personally, I will never attend a for profit school.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks so much for all your feedback. In the end I decided to go with . I did look into a couple schools that said (without saying it officially) that they may not accept classes transferred from Aspen because they aren't regionally accredited. Like I said, they didn't say it officially. I wonder if it makes a difference that I would be going for my BSN instead of a masters degree? Once again, thanks for all the advice and feedback. Good luck to everyone navigating the big wide world of online schooling!

Congratulations!!! I wish you much success!!! :-)

Hello,

I was just going to give everyone a quick update. I started at on the first of November and since then I have completed five classes. I wasn't quite sure if I would enjoy the online classes, since I saw it more as just being completely on my own and having no idea how to get through the classes. But I have been pleasantly surprised. Most of the classes have online lectures that are either live or pre-recorded which makes it feel just like an actual classroom. All of the course mentors have been very responsive to my questions. Another awesome resource that I would recommend to any one doing WGU is the facebook page. I have gotten so much good information and tips. It's like one big huge nursing class, where we are all trying to help each other survive and conquer. I definitely feel this program is very doable, but it can be very time consuming. Almost all of my days off are spent in front of the computer working on school. But it's reassuring to know that it won't last forever. Thanks again for all the help!

I am glad you are doing well at ! I'm a two time WGU grad and I loved the experience. Unless you MUST have a higher GPA, it's well worth considering over a for-profit! :)

Thank you for resurrecting this thread with a nice update. I'm glad you're enjoying your choice.

"None of the DNP programs that I spoke with had any concerns about my degree from Aspen University."

That is because all of Aspen University nursing degrees are CCNE accredited.

BEWARE, you cannot receive any financial aid in the BSN program, including even using student loans. They want to be paid 250$ a month, which is cool. but when you get finished you will owe thousands and will need a way to pay it. You just can't use grants or loans like every other school accepts. I was told that this is because the program is popular. Interesting reason.

Hello RNCHPNINSC,

Aspen University is approved by the U.S. Department of Education to offer federal student financial aid for many of their degree programs, which includes nursing. Aspen University's Federal School Code: 040803. Apart from the monthly payment option - financial Aid, grants and loan programs all are listed here: http://www.aspen.edu/payment-methods

I hope this is helpful.

Have a great evening!
