Transferring from community college to CSU--please help!

If I complete all my general ed and pre reqs at a community college can I transfer to a CSU nursing program and complete the nursing program in 2 years and come out with my BSN? My counselor told me that even if I completed all my pre reqs and gen ed at the cc that I would still have to spend 4 years at the CSU after transferring to complete my BSN. I'm looking at Sonoma State which only has a few upper division courses that I would have to take besides the nursing program classes. I don't see how it could take 4 years.

And by csu you mean cal state uni right?

Normally, yes you can do your GEs at comm college then transfer to csu.

Use assist.org to know the courses that satisfy the nursing pre reqs for csu of your choice.

For example, CSU long beach has a different pre reqs than sonoma state

Most csu's have two options for the nursing program, basic bsn which is 3 years (no classes on summer) and trimester (with classes on summer and finishes faster)

You can only transfer and get into the nursing program if you have the GEs and prereqs (bio, stats, chem) completed. Therefore, BSN at CSU's are either 2 or 3 years.

For upper division GE's, they already have a plan laid out for the student during the program so you can do it while being in the BSN program

Pre-reqs at my cc are two years. Then it's two years for the ADN program. It would be four years for an associate's in nursing. So maybe it's like that. Pre-reqs plus a bachelor's could be six years total. I'm in Nor Cal.

I attend a CSU in Nor Cal. I've had friends who have transferred from CCs only to find out some of their classes weren't equivalent to the universities requirements. Also, look each CSU's graduation requirement. At my school, we have to take 3 writing classes plus a timed writing exam before we graduate (these classes are impacted) so this may contribute to additional years at the CSU.

What crazy counselor are you talking to??

I'm at Sonoma State, and I did everything at SRJC prior. Nothing else at SSU, except you ARE required to take 3 upper division courses (which is a VERY broad requirement, and I took all of mine over the summer; plus, you can challenge Psych 302 once you finish the psych section of the BSN program) at SSU.

I am in NorCal also! I just checked out Sonoma State using assist.org, and their pre-preqs appear the most stream-lined. They are the same, just about, as my CC's pre-reqs.

I've checked other schools as well, and have you guys ever wondered why there are so many different requirements, even at the CC level? Some schools want a specific speech class, a specific psychology, or an additional this, or an additional that. It is tough work to cast a net far and wide, because after you finish up your own cc requirements, you have to continue to take additional courses. I wonder why the cc's, especially those within the same so-called district aren't more stream-lined.

Most CC's and CSU's with nursing programs require students to take their GE's before taking the BSN or ADN program because they want to filter out people who cant meet the required GPA and also, nursing schools are way too impacted so they need to make sure that people applying for the program would be really prepared to do it and get the GE's out of the way and focus entirely on the nursing program.

PS.

some CC's only require A&P biology and Microbiology then you can apply for the ADN program, get put on a waitlist and while waiting to be accepted, you can do your other GE's. However, this is not recommended since waitlists are way too long and average waiting time is about 3 years.

Your reply was so helpful! How many semesters will it have taken you till you graduate? I am trying to find state colleges with only two year nursing programs and that also begin in the spring. I will be eligible for spring nursing programs and I want to get started as soon as possible!
