U.S.A. Maryland

Who's applying? I'm so nervous!

@amandac21 congrats on sending in the application! I'm in state and I'm currently paying about $3,002 for tuition

Thank you! That is per semester?

Hey everyone! For those of you who are also trying to get into UMSON, you can turn in your enrollment fee for the nursing program ($200.00) to save your seat, just in case. In the event that you make it into UMSON, you can give up your seat, but the fee is nonrefundable. Make sure the postmark is before the two-week period after receiving the acceptance in the mail.

Will we be finding out from Towson before UMSON?

She said by the end of October we'll be getting our decisions in the mail! The letter will also include the date the enrollment fee will be due. So as long as the postmark is on or before this date, a seat will be saved.

So it looks like they're starting to send out acceptances into the university itself! I got home from work and found it, and it made me extremely excited even though it is just the university and not the program itself. Although the decisions will made at the end of the month, I'm glad I got into somewhere. (Haha!)

I saw a thread from the Spring 2013 Towson applicants and they started getting acceptance letters to the nursing program October 16th. Too bad we have to wait until the "end of the month," how great would it be to know in only 2 weeks?!

Haha it would be great! At least I'd know I got in! :D

Is anyone on here from the Hagerstown Campus area? I live about 2 hours away in Harford County but that's where I applied. I have a family member who lives there and I plan on getting an apartment out there following a much hoped for acceptance ? Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone had any info about the area...?

Hi bsn-hope. I've actually lived in downtown Hagerstown before. (I'm in Thurmont now.) Once, on the North end of Potomac Street, and once on the South end. The north end of the actual downtown is much nicer than the south. Stay away from Jonathan Street and that area. You can still find pretty affordable places to live. There are areas of Hagerstown that are more like suburbs and nice little neighborhoods. When I lived on North Potomac, the area around my house looked like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting. I felt safe going for walks later at night, after work, alone. I go to a dentist in town, so if you need one, I can give you his name!

My parents have lived in Washington County for over 20 years, so I've watched Hagerstown grow. The area around the mall has gotten really built up. There are the Prime Outlets, on Potomac St., and then another shopping center off Rt. 40, as you head west out of town. Hagerstown is kind of like if you mixed Baltimore and Frederick together, and then shrunk it down. When I lived there, I had a hard time meeting anyone, but that could have been because I worked in Frederick. It's a nice, fairly quiet town. I used to bemoan the lack of a nightlife, but hey, in nursing school, who has time to go out? There are plenty of churches, if you go to church. Meritus is an amazing hospital, from what I understand, and more progressive than FMH in Frederick. There are some decent restaurants. For more excitement, and better grocery shopping options, Frederick is only about a half hour away. One thing I will say about Hagerstown, is that it does not have a book store! I'm not kidding! The amazing used book store, Wonder Book, closed all its H-town branches, and Borders went out of business. I think there are a few small stores left, but it says volumes about a place when the nearest book store is 30 minutes away. I know that sounds critical, and irrelevant in the age of the internet, but I still find that odd! But, Hagerstown also has City Park, which is a great place to walk, jog, or picnic. Hagerstown is also close to the Appalachian Trail, which is pretty much the greatest place ever to go hiking. There's a huge Blues fest every spring, tons of Civil War history surrounding the town, and Hagerstown has a roller derby team! There are a few 24-hour grocery stores and Sheetz, a convenience store that will satisfy your late-night junk food cravings during study sessions. (I'm a health-food nut, and I still cannot resist their fries.)

Anyway, that's the rundown of Hagerstown. I did like living there, it was just far away from my school and work. If you feel like you'd like more of a country environment, there are plenty of rural areas within a reasonable drive. I love Thurmont, and it is about 30 mins away, via 77. That's a beautiful drive over the Catoctin Mountains. All-in-all, it's a little town that will have just enough to meet your needs, and quiet enough to not distract you while in school.Let me know if you ever want to know more about it.

Oh! To add on to afowler77's post above, there is a sort-of bookstore in Hagerstown called 2nd And Charles. It's like a "modern" Wonderbook, and I believe it used to be a Borders, as its layout looks very similar. Most of the items are used and some are new, like the ukuleles. Half of the store is dedicated to books, while the other half is music, records, instruments, and videogames. Pretty nifty place, I never leave without getting something.

Wow thanks for the details afowler77 and littlemango!! I'll be heading out there this weekend for a bonfire but now I'm planning on leaving earlier so I can check out the areas and places you've told me about. Thanks A LOT! ?
