Who's applying? I'm so nervous!
bsn-hope I am so happy for you! I just got on the thread to check and see how it went! Now yes, get that Micro done! Haha!
afowler77 I totally agree with you. It's sad that the nursing culture has this dark side to it, but it is something we're going to be facing either a student or a nurse. The best thing to do is like you said: be resilient, be tough. We can only look after ourselves and most importantly, the patient!!!
aalamo, congrats on your acceptance! I'm about 30 minutes from the Hagerstown campus, and the commute is beeeautiful! And against traffic. Woohoo! I'm sure once the program starts you'll find other people who will want to share a place with you too. If not from the program, there are other students from other programs! Put up a flyer, if allowed.
fitprincess1, there are plenty of us here who will (or will not) get their acceptances from UMSON soon. In the event that he or she may choose UMSON over Towson, you may be taken out of the waitlist! Just keep faith.
I have a question.. So I finally got my acceptance to Towson the University. And I saw there is a separate deposit for that. -_- does that mean I should just pay the $200 for the nursing school and hold off on the deposit to the universtiy until I know for sure if I will be going to towson?
If anyone has any questions about living in Hagerstown, I'm happy to answer. I lived in Hagerstown for about 4 years (in two apartments) and for many, many years, it was the closest "big" town to me when I lived in Washington County. If you don't want to live in Hagerstown, consider Thurmont! That's where I live now, and it is about 30 minutes (but only 20 miles) away. I like Thurmont because it is virtually equidistant from Hagerstown and Frederick. I will say that Hagerstown can feel kind of isolating, because the nearest towns (other than tiny country towns) are about a half hour away. One thing I learned about living in Washington County was that you get used to having to drive quite a ways to get to certain things. A 20-minute drive is nothing when you're out there! If anyone is looking for a place, I can ask some of my friends who still live out that way if they know of any good places up for rent or anyone looking for a roommate. I also have friends who own a small apartment building fairly close to campus. I doubt they have anything available, though, because it's a nice building and they are great landlords, but I'll ask just in case.
On the plus side, I've heard nothing but good things about Meritus. I'm looking forward to doing clinicals there. And City Park is beautiful in the spring! There is also an incredible parade- the Alsatia Mummers parade, right around Halloween.

Their petty behavior seems to be a sign of insecurity. It's one thing to be tough, being mean is something else. I feel like these jabs, barbs, put-downs, etc...detract from our true focus, which is to care for others. Putting others down is unproductive.I could go on about this.
I'm tough, I'm resilient. I can handle anything people sling at me. I can walk away from any argument. Except one that questions my integrity. I will fight to prove and preserve my integrity and honesty. Having worked in retail, I've been called every name, insulted, and physically threatened. I can put up a thick force field to deflect that!
I know every field has people like that. It just seems like nurses are especially sour and out to prove something. It's like they think that, to stand above others, you have to cut them off at the knees. I think many people, not just nurses, feel threatened by those who know more than they do. This behavior has no place in our future profession. I'll certainly tough it out, but I'd like to work to change that negative culture.
