Torrance Area?

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could tell me a bit about the Torrance area? I am a Canadian, who is graduating from a BScN program in May and am looking at this area to work next year. Is there any new Canadian grads down there now? What is the pay like? Is this area very far away from the coast? What are the living expenses like?

Thanks alot for any info!!:)

There are two hospitals in Torrance: Little Company of Mary and Torrance Memorial. Both are good hospitals. But I don't know if they hire foreign trained nurses.

Also, Torrance is just south of LA and within commuting distance to LA hospitals

You might want to do a Google search for the hospital websites.

I think all hospitals in Southern California hire Canadian grads. It's near the coast, but not as close as places like Huntington Beach, Long Beach, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach (see the common theme in the names?). Cost of living is lower than a lot of areas in LA (partly cause it isn't as nice as some areas) and starting wages for new grads are around 25-28 an hour last I checked.

I'm canadian too. Torrance is nice, it borders on some not so nice cities though. I live about 20-30 min from there.

Other surrounding area hospitals: Harbor UCLA Medical Ctr (Carson), South Bay Kaiser Permanente (Harbor City), Little Co Of Mary San Pedro (San Pedro). Little longer drive - Long Beach area hospitals.

Not sure what tinycraft means by "borders on some not so nice cities." Torrance is surrounded by Palos Verdes Peninsulla (very nice border area). Drive west and you're in the beach cities area (Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach & Manhattan Beach /another very nice border area).

Catch the freeways & you're within 2 hours driving time to the mountains or desert, more nice "border" areas.

Try it, you'll like it.

Inglewood, carson - imo, not so good. like everywhere there are good and bad neighborhoods within the city.

Torrance is a huge city. I would try to live closer to the west side, which will bring you even closer to the beach. Be careful though, there is an Arco refinery in either Carson or (east) Torrance.

Torrance is close to the ocean. The climate is very moderate. Along with typical Southern California mild winters it is rarely miserably hot in the summer.

Beaches are very close.

Because of traffic I would suggest working in Long Beach for day shift at Long Beach Memorial if you like a big hospital with many specialties including a childrens hospital OR St. Mary's for a community hospital.

If you work nights Los Angeles area hospitals don't take long going opposite the heavy traffic.

OR you could choose a hospital right in Torrance as posted above.

It is less expensive and still nice.

Hi There, I live in Hermosa Beach. I did a preceptorship at Torrance Memorial Hospital. If you live in Torrance or North Redondo Beach, you will certainly save money in rent! Our one bedroom here right near the beach is $1350/mo.

I was going to work at TMMC - new grad pay is $27.00/hr. Great hospital, I am moving north due to my significant other's job, so that is why I did not accept a position.

Good Luck
