So, what would be good reasons to go into nursing?

I heard one is if you like to deal with people at their worse.

11. you get to be part of people's most difficult or happiest times, most intimate times, you will be there.

...and the list goes on and on. i'm sure each nurse/student will have a bunch of things to add to it...

i love this poem, i have it on my wall :)

being a nurse means...

you will never be bored.

you will always be frustrated.

you will be surrounded by challenges.

so much to do and so little time.

you will carry immense responsibility

and very little authority.

you will step into people's lives

and you will make a difference.

some will bless you.

some will curse you.

you will see people at their worst...

and at their best.

you will never cease to be amazed

at people's capacity for

love, courage, and endurance.

you will see life begin...and end.

you will experience resounding triumphs

and devastating failures.

you will cry a lot.

you will laugh a lot.

you will know what it is to be human

and to be humane.

Mia13...I have that poem on my bedroom wall as well. Many days I never even notice it, some days I glance over at it and every now and then, I really have to study it to remind myself why I do what I do.

You are a nursing student and I have been a nurse for 25 years. We are worlds apart in experience, but, you are on the right track. There are lots of really good reasons to be a nurse.. some days it just gets lost in all the daily crap!

Best of luck to you & keep this poem with you for a long time to come. You will need the reminder some day as well. Thanks

Sorry to get off topic but how about actually getting a job these days? Any advice!

That's so sweet, thank you!

The funny thing is I read what you experienced nurses write about the bad days, all the struggles and all the things you go through, and surprisingly I still want to be a nurse. I've heard so much things that are supposed to make me reconsider my choice, but for some reason I don't. Maybe it's meant to be, maybe it is a "calling" hmm.. I wonder why I heard it only 2 years ago, and not like some people who wanted to be a nurse since childhood.

Nursing has been an adventure...some days we call it "high adventure nursing" I knew I never wanted a desk job and most days I feel satisfied with the work I have done.

:)

I had "a desk job" , my parents convinced me it was the way to go, so I did and I was bored, and unhappy. After being laid off, I was lost and doing a lot of soul searching... thinking I chose the wrong career path and trying to figure out what to do next... and I couldn't.

Then I just told myself to give myself a break, to stop asking or telling and just listen, it should come to me... and a couple of days after not thinking about it, I woke up with a clear thought in my mind that said "nurse" and it felt right, it felt like I was drawn to it or something. After that morning I spend months "testing" myself trying to figure out if this is for real, trying to see if I would change my mind... time kept passing and nothing changed, it just feels right. I will be a RN :) no mode "desk job" for me. So I started on my pre-reqs. and applied, passed my admissions test, got an offer, confirmed it and will be starting NS in Sept. :yeah:I think it is my calling. :):redpinkhe Sometimes I wish I've gone this way right outta high school, I would be done NS right now, but anyway I'm just glad I found this, and it feels right. :D

I only have one and this is my personal one. Because it's all you ever wanted to do, and you haven't been happy with any other job, even though the money was good. Because all you really want to do is take care of people that need your help because the compassion is there.

I was a real estate agent and my husband still is and we pulled down over $100k in our good years, but I wasn't happy because it wasn't what I wanted to do. So, I quit my job and went back to school at 33 years old. Fortunately, my husband wants whatever makes me happy.
