Took Nclex-rn on September 2013 and passed... My Study plan

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to share my nclex experience and study plan with you guys... I mainly used Saunder's and Kaplan Qbank to study. I devoted at least 4-5 hours per day for 3 weeks. I would break up the 4-5 hours each day into 2 each. In the morning I would do at least 100 questions and then during the evening I would not only look over the rationales of every question (right or wrong) butttt... I would WRITE down the rationales so that its in my memory. Any topic that I wasn't familiar with (or only knew a little bit about)... I used the Saunder's comprehensive book to fill in the topic so I get a better understanding (and again would write down facts in my rationales notebook). This way I was looking at a variety of questions and focusing on my weaknesses without wasting time. Lastly, before bedtime I would look over my notebook that I wrote the rationales down in and read it before going to bed.

I filled at least two of the 6in x 9in notebooks and read them over. That way I'm reviewing effectively. Remember guys this is a computer adaptive test, it tries to find a weakness. The trick is to fake no weaknesses.

Saunder's comprehensive book is helpful in filling in those gaps and the Qbank is helpful in getting you in the mode of doing questions. Did I feel the Kaplan question were like the nclex?? Yes, I did feel the questions were phased in the same way. I did the whole qbank.

My Nclex experience:

I had my test scheduled for 12:30 pm (which is around the time I would normally do questions for those 3 weeks). My mind was already in that questions doing zone and I was able to concentrate better because my brain and body were familiar with this routine. I got to the test center 30 minutes early and got myself situated. I said a quick prayer and started. I would only concentrate on the question in front of me. I did not try to look for a pattern in the questioning because I would be wasting brain energy.

As soon the computer shut off, I said another pray and then raised my hand.

Minutes after leaving, I went home and did the pearsonvue trick (pvt trick... made sure it said delivery successful) and it gave me that good pop up. Remember the number of questions has NOTHING TO DO WITH IF YOU PASSED OR NOT... DO NOT WASTE TIME LOOKING INTO THAT. Exactly 48 hours after I finished the test, the quick results were up and I passed!!!! (I took the test on a Friday and the results were up on Sunday)

I hope this helps someone out there...

Congratulations.. :) and thank you for sharing your study plans, I am going to take the exam too and was wondering if you took down notes from saunders book that u reviewed..kind of like a summary? ...

Mostly I took notes from the Kaplan qbank rationales... But topic I just didn't have a clue about... I took from Saunders ...remember to read those notes nightly . Good luck

Just found out this morning! Pearsonvue hasn't even updated my status to "Pass." The California BRN has already posted my RN license number; only 2 days after taking the NCLEX (I've been looking for my name every day lol)! Woohoo! It's official! The PVT good popup works!

Thank you ;) ...coz I'm writing down the important stuffs like s/s, intx and other important words that I feel like I need to stick in my mind...but it's alot to take down on my notebook i don't know if I am wasting my time writing ? Well except for the ones for index cards like couple of drugs and all lab values.

If that's how you learn best, then that would be helpful. I wrote down key points that seemed important on several sheets of paper and I took these with me wherever I went to drill them into my head. Repetition works best for me and that goes for all the core info and lab values...read it everyday so it is a permanent fixture in your brain.

Hey everyone,

I'll share my NCLEX experience with all of you...

I took my NCLEX September 10 for the second time. I took it back at the end of June with 174 questions in about two and a half hours. I had taken the Kaplan review and studied on my own as well. My Kaplan Qbank scores were between 55%-60% so there was no reason why I should have failed, in my opinion, but I did. I got my Kaplan money refunded and began a new course of action...

When I got my ATT at the beginning of August, I scheduled for September 10. I planned a study schedule of 50-75Q a day using Saunders 5th edition and the Lippincott Alternate Format book (after a friend who had also failed in only 75 questions recommended it to me). Sometimes I would take a day or two off here or there just to give my brain a break. I felt more confident this time going in for the test, but was scared to death to try the pop-up because I had gotten the CC page the first time and was heartbroken...and I couldn't face doing that to myself a second time...

I got to the test center about 40 minutes early, and had to wait until exactly 7:30 to get in. All the while I was praying and praying that I would pass this exam. I went in and went right back to test. I didn't focus too hard on what kind of question I got if it was passing level, or on what number I was at until the end. I answered number 75 and it was over. I was stunned because I was definitely not expecting it to shut off when it did. I only took about an hour to do my test and then leave. The drive home was nerve wracking, and after a lot of my friends (both nursing school and my regular friends) told me to check the pop up, I did, and it WORKED!!! I couldn't stop crying I was so happy...

So here's some advice for anyone reading this thread wondering about what they can do their first, second, or however many times..

1) Definitely go get the Lippincott Alternate format book. I feel it helped me get better at practicing SATA, hot spot, drag and drop, whatever others there are...(even though I had mostly SATA and maybe one drag and drop)

2) Don't stress if you miss a day or two of studying. And don't try to play catch up on questions. If you missed doing 50, don't try to do 100 tomorrow to make up for it. You don't want to overload yourself.

3) Focus on one question at a time, and read EVERY SINGLE rationale for your practice questions. My weakest spot the first time was thyroid (hyper, hypo, etc) and in doing questions this time around and reading everything, I understood it so much better...

4) Don't give up...no need to keep going with this. We made it through two years (or longer) of hell, why stop when you're so close to what you've worked so hard for....

I am a Foreign Nurse taking the NCLEX for the second time. I have been using Saunder's Comprehensive 5th Edition, Kaplan's RN NCLEX Strategies, CICNurse video series, youtube videos and online questions from NCLEX QB and Saunder's. From QB i have score of 80%, and from Saunder's out of 4,435 questions I have 3,358 correct. How prepared am I to be taking this exam? Now I am focusing on the questions wrong and the rationals and topics so I can study those better. Is it necessary to take any Kaplan or HESI courses online?
