Too much fluff in nursing programs?

Published

Do you feel their was too much "fluff" in your nursing program. I think relational practice courses are extremely useful.... but I think maybe 1-2 of these courses are enough. I feel their should be more focus on pharm/patho in nursing, as I feel this would be more useful. How do others feel? Maybe it is different in certain programs?

I think it really depends on which province you live in. I know of new grads that were hired into ICU, NICU and ER.

whereabouts are you located?

I could not believe that I had to learn how to chart medication administration at my first job. Not one time in school were we handed a med admin record (back before EMR) and taught how to document a med pass. But that good old APA style for writing papers! You bet! Essential to a nurse's survival on any floor in any facility!

Same here, Ontario has new grads hired into ICU & ER.

Many of my friends were educated in Canada and I was educated in the US. I feel so lucky that I had the education I had. We learned all of these things from the get-go. Meanwhile my friends were writing long theoretical essays about things they have never come across again so far in their career. It really makes a difference when we compare our first nursing work experiences.

There was a report a few years ago, or an internal audit or something, where it was found that Canadian grads aren't actually meeting competencies as they should, and schools of nursing are sooner or later going to have to shape up or ship out. If I find it again I will post it.
