To late to negotiate salary?

Ok here is my question...I am relocating to a new state and was offered a job in Feb, I will be starting in 1 week. When I interviewed I was quoted an hourly rate, however I have now become aware that this is the amount they pay new grads...I know that I only have one year of experience but should I still be getting paid the same as someone right out of school?? I am not sure? Of course I would like to make more, but I am not sure if it is still OK to negotiate at this point...I did not sign anything in regards to salary. Also if you think I should, then should I wait until next week when I am there and can do so in person, or take the bulls by the horn and try over the phone?? I am just unsure of this so if you have any advice I would love to hear it!!

I don't have that much experience with this but...are you willing to ask to see their pay scale? Some hospitals actually pay new grads more than more experienced nurses. Sad but true. If you could see their pay scale then you'd know where you fall. The worst they could tell you is no.

I would search websites of local facilities and see what their rates are or call their HR departments. At my facility they don't pay new grads any less and if the rate they quoted you is a good one for the area I would leave it alone. If not, everything is negotiatable and depending on the nursing demand in that area you could ask for more. Perhaps you could approach it as now that you are hunting for a place to live you realize the the rate isn't enough etc. Good luck!

with a start date so close it almost sounds like a nonverbal agreement. i'd take it and keep my mouth shut then woo them with my skills and work ethic. the hospitals i worked for in the past usually had a 6 month evaluation 9with a raise) the first year. raises after that were based on merit......more merit, more money. good luck on your new job!

Wow..every post I make you respond like I am a moron...I did my homework...but the new grads just got a raise July first...I was offered my position in Feb..I was just wondering. I may ask..I am not going to haggle, but I think it may be a valid question that I could ask. I guess once again I have to tell you I am not an idiot. Man...sorry I even asked.

I am starting nursing school this fall, but my wife has been a nurse for 3 years. At the start of this year she took a new job. After the first month, she felt that she was doing a lot more work (compared to others there) and was a lot better at it. She explained this in detail with examples to the nursing director and said that she would like a raise of $2 per hour. The director listened to her and said she would have to see and get back with her. In one week she came back and said that she would be able to give her a $1 raise. Again, this was after only 1 month of working there.

So you might follow this example. Get in the door, make sure you are happy and can confidently explain why you are worth more than a new grad and should be paid more. You might get lucky. The worst that can happen at that stage is they say NO.

In my opinion (it's the only one I have!) it's too close to your start date to try to renegotiate your salary. I really wouldn't imagine they'd give it to you, and if they don't (and of course you take the job anyway) it doesn't give you much of a standing with them in terms of future negotiations. You would have been unsuccessful once already, and might just leave a bad taste in their mouths, if you know what I mean.

Take the job at the rate you agreed on. After awhile--after your probation period is up, let's say--you can broach the subject of salary. See if there's a 'written-in-stone' pay scale, or if it's flexible.

If the new grad pay went up as of July 1st do you know for certian that the starting pay for nures with exp. stayed the same. Maybe you could call the HR dept and just ask if that rate went up also. You really would not be haggling just inquiring.
