The title may seem harsh since the word FAILURE is in it, but I don't mean it that way, and nor is this a thread for us who failed, yes I failed too, to blame other things for why we failed. I just wanted to make a thread about factors that may have contributed to our failure so future nclex takers can take note and wanna avoid as well.
Well, I failed my first try and am taking again this September.
I think I failed because of the following:
- I scheduled an examination date I think didn't allow me enough time to study. If ever you feel your knowledge is still inadequate, you CAN reschedule and move your exam. I should have. I only had 4 weeks, and I crammed in the last two weeks
- Poor study habits. I slacked off abit and didn't study at times I should've had. I also studied at times when I was so tired, so when I doze off and fell asleep, I could barely remember most of what I had reviewed.
- I didn't focus on my weakest areas. I easily got frustrated when my scores were very low, esp on SATAS and prioritizing type
- Test taking jitters. The day prior to taking my exam, I crammed as much as I could. Didn't take a bath so I wouldn't lose time, and I didn't sleep the whole night 'cause I was afraid if I do I might oversleep and miss my appointment. I had a morning exam
- I didn't take my time. I breezed through the questions without reading them over. I tend to do this even when I was in college. I don't go over the question. Sometimes even in my practice test, I would tend to not read the important words such as LEAST, INAPPROPRIATE, etc
- Other factors such as family problems, and pressure to pass!

Quantity and quality of studying effort would be the first thing to look at.

I would like to thank you for posting this. You have made some very great key points that i can relate to as well. It is wonderful that you now realize what you have to do to better prepare for your exam come September and what mistakes not to make. I too recently failed at the first attempt and will take it again in September. Good luck to you because I'm sure you will do just fine now that you know what you must do to have a successful outcome. :rckn:

I learned having a positive mindset also helps!! IMO, it can be a big difference in choosing the WRONG answer and overlooking the RIGHT answer. The more you stay calm, and control your jitters, the more focused you can be.

I too failed on the first try.
I thought to myself "I got this!" I reviewed only a little bit and just breezed through the questions. I had a lot of pressure to pass and felt like I HAD to pass.
This time I am doing questions every day, studying content and looking into an online review class. I know I have it in me, we all do!
Good luck!
