To everyone deciding on a school and working though those pre-reqs...

Published

I feel your pain! I have researched every college with a nursing program (ADN&BSN) within a 100 mile radius of Detroit... I've studied every application process thoroughly... Compared transfer credits... Even paid a few of the schools a visit.. Oh my goodness it's maddening!!! And it's become my obsession.. I'm determined to not worry about which school I go to any more, and just apply to all of them, and let them fight over me. :coollook:

Seriously though, if the process of just getting into a program is this nerve wrenching, what am I getting myself into if I actually do get accepted?

For now all I can do is take a deep breath, be patient, bust through the few pre-reqs I have left and see where this crazy road I stumbled upon takes me... I am both excited and scared as hell..

Thank you all for letting me vent. :)

Working THROUGH those pre-reqs... oops.

Where are you thinking of applying to?

Well right now I'm still working on my pre and co reqs at HFCC, where I've been taking classes on and off for a while. Just need my chem and I can get on the waitlist! In the meantime I'm wanting to apply to a few different schools, mainly OCC, Oakland U, WSU, and WCCC, I even looked at Mercy in Toledo. Right now my GPA is at 3.2, so I'm hoping to beef that up a bit before I start rolling out apps in the summer. I'm starting this process back up after taking a 4 year hiatus, life got in the way like it tends to do sometimes, and now a hubby and 2 babies later I think I'm finally ready! :) Don't know what my chances are of getting accepted, I know there's some stiff cometition out there, but at least once I'm on the wait list at good ol' Hank I know I can fall back on that......eventually!

I have been working on pre reqs for quite a while as well. I think this summer I too will finally be able to start applying to different programs. The sad part though, is that if you wait until the summer to start applying you probably won't start a program until the Fall of 2012 which means another YEAR of just waiting around! I am so ready to get started already. We are pretty much in the same boat. I have about a 3.2 GPA and I am hoping to beef that up some as well even if it means retaking a few classes (which I would hate to do but deem neccessary) I tried getting into ITT tech's new RN program last year but although I did well on the test didn't score high enough :( Hopefully though this year brings me some luck. I was also considering WCCC, HFCC (taking Chem this upcoming semester), and OCC. Davenport as well. I hope something works out for the both of us...maybe we can keep each other motivated!!

Really do your research on Davenport! Make sure that the school you attend is accredited and that the courses you pay for will be recognized at other institutions. While it may feel right now like you would do anything just to be in a nursing program, take it easy. You need to consider that some hospitals and even LTCs won't consider a non-accredited graduate. Also you might want/need to get your BSN one day.

Davenport actually offers the BSN program now instead of the ADN. They have an LPN program as well. I have been doing some research and haven't really turned up any bad things about Davenport thus far. My sister graduated from there with a different degree and had no problems getting a job or any issues with people not honoring her degree. I do understand what you mean though because so many places try to get over and you take their program and end up having wasted your money. I definitely don't want to be someone like that! They are only an option though I am still keeping my feet on the ground and ears to the street!

MsAshley I need the motivation and encouragement, thank you! I'm new to this board but I've found everyone to be very welcoming, with a lot of helpful knowledge as well!

I wish I could start applying sooner, I want to get a few more classes out of the way first, I'll be taking A&P 1, Micro and an algebra class this winter.. Even though I just need chem as a pre-req at HFCC, I still need the pre-req math for chem (the pre-req math for the nursing program as it turns out isn't the pre-req for the chem which I found very strange....) Anyways I can finally get the chem outta the way in spring, get waitlisted, and send out some apps... I know it will suck waiting until fall 2012, it would be great to be able to start in winter 2012 if possible! :) That's my plan so far.....

BTW, I can't send PM's on here for some reason, do I need more posts?

Sorry it took me so long to respond with the holidays and all I have been kind of busy. Yes you do need a certain amount of posts to be able to PM. I want to say its like 15 but I'm not sure its been a while since Ive reached that goal :) I took Chem a few semesters ago and didn't do so well sad to say. I took it at HFCC as well. There is really no easy or lenient teacher to choose for chem according to rate my professor. I took ----. She was pretty cool as far as being able to talk to her about where you were lacking and what you could do to improve but her tests were pretty difficult. By the end of the semester almost half of my class had dropped!! Have you picked a teacher for chem yet?

Avoid taking chem 131 online, we started with 24, only 6 showed up for the final.

I don't think I'd do well with online classes at all, especially a more difficult class like chem! I'll have to wait until spring to take it, does the teacher your referring to have a very irish sounding last name by chance? ;)

I'm about to take A&P 1, class starts monday! Anyone take that at HFCC? Any advice? I took Bio 130 at HFCC years ago and did alright, I heard the A&P's are comparable to that.. I'm also taking Microbiology...

Sorry it was Bio 134 not 130....
