To apply or not to apply?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello All,

I am a current pre-nursing student and I have a problem. Okay, so I decided to attend college in Fall 09 semester and took two classes: Sociology and English. I passed Sociology with a B+, but I failed English (with an F) because I did not pass my final :crying2:. This brought my GPA to a 1.65, which shattered my world. So this semester I am retaking English, along with a few other classes. I just received my application to apply for my school's nursing program. My problem is should I apply for the Fall 2010 semester, this semester? The applications are due April 2nd, and I am not sure if they will look at the grade I got Fall 09 or Spring 2010. Please help! What should I do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That's pretty low! Are sure you met all the requirements to apply to nursing school? I think you need more than just those 2 classes. (More credits; at least 12 maybe?) You might want to bring up your GPA to at least a 3.0.

Oh and of course your F will appear on your transcript unless you retake the class and get your final grade which would be in May..

I took those two classes last semester, which was actually my first semester. This semester (spring 2010), I am taking Intro to Chemistry, A&P 1, Intro to Psychology, college experience (a class that everyone has to take), and I am retaking English. The thing that I am concerned about is: Will they look at grades for this semester? If so, I may have nothing to worry about, because I know the grade that I get for this semester will replace the one for last semester, as far as English goes. The application is due in April and the semester ends in May, so should I just apply and assume that they will look at the grades for the end of this semester. That is my dilemma. Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone help me out by giving me some advice? Should I wait?

Don't let your F grade bring you down. Once you retake it (and make sure to get an A this time), your GPA will go up. The F grade will remain in your transcript though. I don't think it's a good idea to take chem, AP1, and psychology, and English all together. It will be extremely difficult to achieve an A to each key courses. Remember that you need to get as high as you can in each key courses. If you think you can do it, then go for it. My only suggest is to find a good professor. And study.

If you decide to take all of them together, then you should definitely apply for the fall of '10. Your English grade will be replaced by your new grade (in some schools, they average the 2 grades) If you don't get in the nursing program this fall, try next year. At least you tried for the fall of 2010.

Good luck!

I'd wait until next semester. They can only look at the grades of the classes that have already been taken. Applying for schools is time consuming and expensive because of the entrance exams, essays, required transcripts, and entrance fees. Focus on getting the best possible grades this semester, and apply for Spring 2011.

If the classes you are currently taking are pre-reqs, then you may not even be able to apply until after you've taken them. If applications are due in April and your courses aren't over until May, I would wait. They will be looking at the grades that are on your transcript when you apply most likely.

Unfortunately as someone already posted they can not look at what you are currently doing. They can only look at classes that you have copmleted. I know most schools base it on transcripts, so the classes that you are taking now wouldn't be on your transcript until after the semester is finished.

Don't look at it as the end of the world though. What is another 6 months to a year in the big picture. Focus on doing a good job this semester, take some more pre-reqs and apply next go around. Remember, it is not just did you do enough to meet the minimum for entrance, but it is have you done enough to compete with the other people looking to get in. I don't know how competitive your program is, but from my experience ALL are somewhat competitive. Take this time to position yourself for success. Make yourself the BEST candidate for a slot in the program next time around. You will be glad that you did. : )

It is possible for you to apply for Fall '10. Is the application deadline before or after midterms? If you are applying to the school that you are already attending, it is possible for them to view your midterm grades to see where you stand. That may work in your favor. There are numerous students who are admitted provisionally, with the understanding that they will only be fully accepted upon the completion of all required courses. Good Luck!:yeah:

Thanks for the advice everyone. I decided to call the nursing department and ask some questions. I was informed that I could apply now if I chose to. And as MzRN2B stated, they will most likely wait to see how I did at the end of this semester. My final decision is to try and wait until after I take my midterms (in March) and then go from there. Wish me luck. I will post an update to let you guys know how I made out. :o

Hello All

I am back and my semester is done. I did not apply for the Nursing program at my school this semester and I decided to wait. My grades are in and here's how I did:

A&P 1: B

Chemistry: C+

English: C+

Psychology: B-

College Experience: A

My current GPA is a 2.79

Taking English Comp 2 this summer. Philosophy during summer 2. And taking A&P 2, College Algebra, Public Speaking, and Computer Information Systems this Fall. I have decided to apply to my current schools program and Fairliegh Dickinson University's Nursing Program.

Thank you all for the advice.
