TMO

Published

i called the TMO office at fort mcpherson today and have an appt. for a briefing march 4 before going to cot march 9. is that all i need to have set up as far as moving? the lady i spoke with said that's all i had to do and i'll fill out an app. on the day of the briefing, i'm not sure she knew what i was asking though. what i'm trying to do is have everything in my house packed as much as possible and then have them pick it up a couple days after cot ends so it will meet me at keesler the next week- my mother will be here to let the movers in but i won't be around.

will i be able to pick what day they come when i go to the briefing march 4 or is it more complicated than that?

is it ok if i have most things packed but pictures and similar items won't be?

how do i know if i'll have time when i get to keesler to find a home and how much time will i get?

and lastly, if i graduate cot april 9 i was going to try to have the movers pick up my stuff the 13th or 14th of april. would it get to keesler in just a couple of days? i'm hoping to avoid putting my stuff in storage.

The time frame of your request really depends on how busy the moving company is at the time of your request. Typically summer time is the busy PCS season so setting up a move quickly might be easier in the spring.

I didn't really pack any of my belongings when the movers came because I was told that if anything broke in a box that I packed that the moving company wouldn't pay for the damage. I had my husband watch them the best he could when they were packing. Remember, they work for you so don't let them spread out around the house. Have them pack one room at a time so you can eagle eye them! If you don't like how something is packed, ask them to re-do it.

As for the briefing, I didn't go because I was a COT. My husband went. He said it's not really a briefing, just a one-on-one with a TMO agent for a quick "how-to". But since I wasn't there, perhaps someone else might want to chime in here.

Generally when you report to duty your commander gives you 8 house hunting days. I've heard of people getting 10 days but my commander only gives 8. These days will not count against your leave.

Yep - I wouldn't call it a briefing at all. Greek is right.

And YES YES YES - DON'T LET THEM PACK MORE THAN ONE ROOM AT A TIME.

I just did this a few months ago. I put a date on the application and had no problem getting that date. Like Little Greek said, the busy season is summer, so you probably won't have a problem. Keep in mind, you're going from Maxwell to Keesler...look at your orders...you probably only have one travel day. If you take more than that to report into the base, I believe you're charged leave. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I didn't get to take permissive TDY because I didn't have to search for a house...I took base housing. The idea I had was that your commander can approve the house hunting days once you've checked in. All this stuff is so confusing!! :)

My stuff went from Gainesville, FL to Keesler. The movers came Feb. 6th. I'm not totally sure what day they put it in storage, but I called them Feb. 18th to set up delivery, and my stuff is here. If your stuff does go to storage, it won't be there for long, and they take care of all that! All you have to do is call them once you get here to set up delivery.

You probably already know this, but make sure your mom has power of attorney, because there will be stuff she has to sign if she's the one there when they pick up your stuff.

Side note...I just got to Keesler. PM me if you need anything!! I started inprocessing this week...you're going to really like the people here!!

How/where do you get a power of attorney for just household goods>?

my recruiter said i only need power of attorney if i can't set up the move date myself but if i can get the date set then she can be the one here when they pick it up and i wouldn't need power of attorney, is that not the case??? if that's wrong then this is about to get way more stressful because i was told i have to go to dobbins to give her power of attorney and then she would have to go to fort mcpherson to set up everything...

i just spoke to my friend in the navy and he cleared it up so now i get it!

So you know your recruiter was making it WAAAAAYYYY harder than it really is....

I am wondering if anybody knows hwo TMO is done when you have a TDY. I will be in Scottsdale, AZ for 3 months before I go to my permanent duty station. Will they move my stuff twice or just once?

No, they will move it to your permanent duty station. While you are on TDY you will live in billeting or provided dorms, so whatever you want for those three months you should take to COT or set aside to be mailed to you.

I went to Legalzoom.com to get my power of attorney. It cost like $55. I needed mine quickly, so I paid like $20 more to have it emailed to me the same day. I called an attorney in town and they would have charged about $300!

If you have orders and oath of office (or your ID card) and live close enough to base, you can get them done for free.
