Tired of bedside nursing, 15 years exp. in South Florida.
Maybe you could step away from bedside nursing, but remember you can always go back?-Joe
Very true. I've had breathers away from bedside nursing including 5 years as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in an essentially nurse consultation/outreach rôle, and 5 years as an occupational health nurse in a large international organisation. Good breaks to have had, but you know, I was always gagging to get back to hospital! I've now been back at the bedside again for over two years in oncololgy, and appreciate all the more what I do now, for all it's frustrations. It is true, that old saying that the grass is always greener elsewhere.
If you are truly "tired of bedside nursing" than for the sake of your pt's find something else fast. In my opinion it's not possible to be really good at something that you don't enjoy, especially something as difficult as bedside nursing.
I love the bedside but I'm also a good leader so I was driven to become a charge nurse in my ED...while it is fun to have one of the most challenging nursing jobs around (IMHO)...there is something to be said for the ability to truly help a pt have a better day with a smile and/or a caring touch.
Good luck in your adventures, some great advice on this site and I'm glad your seeking it.
At this point, 5 years in or whatever it is for me, I miss my days at a desk living a normal life. Many of the people I know in other careers complain about their drive or someone drinking the last cup of coffee. Oh well, we have job security. I think.
Sales. Research type stuff. Management (though this would bore me to my grave). Insurance companies hire nurses. Clinic. Those are a few things that come to mind.

I dont blame you it sucks at times--I am tired of it just after two years--I am going back to grad school in the fall for an MSN and then DNP--Rather work with clients and not "Patients"
