Tips for soon-to-be RN

Published

Hi guys. I am graduating in May and I was just wondering if anybody has any advice to give me about being a good nurse, moving up in the world, important things to know about nursing, etc. Thanks

My advice is to sit down and talk with your patients...at their level. Pull up a chair and talk.

don't expect to know everything.. look up every drug you don't know before you give it.... ask ask ask if you don't know something

I agree....but you will get there. If you lack on anything...look to your mgmt. We are only as good as our people.

from the patients point of view...try to find the time to care, spend time with them, talk to them, treat them like a preson not the illness or injery that made them need to be there.

I do understand that it can be hard to find the time but if you just spend a couple of minutes with them they will feel like you care about them.

1. Time management - try not go back in and out of room for stuff you should have brought in the first place ie. prep pads, xtra saline syringe

2. Be organized-

3. Don't allow yourself to be disrespected by other nurses, staff, Drs, patients, family members of patients

4. Take your breaks and lunch.

5. See rule #3

Good luck. Ben

When you get frustrated because you have too many things to do make a priority list.

When people ask if you need help, give them something to do.
