hey i only have onequestion.. i am about to begin my studies as a practical nurse but i have minor asthma i was wondering if thisis going to come in the way of my employment or training. i feel fine with no symptoms at all but i a just scared if this will come in my way ??

The unit I work on we have three nurses with very bad asthma. They let everyone on the unit know, my supervisor inforces the no perfume rule, and we do not use the santiation wipes around them. I would just be upfront with your co-workers and supervisor about your asthma on the unit you get hired for. They do not have the right to ask medical history during an interview so if you are worried that you may have difficulty you would have to tell them.

At my place of employment I had blood work, ua, and a complete physical, which included weight, lifting ability, vision and hearing.

Then when I was on the unit, there was more, I had competencies that I neded to be checked off on. I finally finished the last of them.

Hope that answered your question.

Have a Great Day,

it's nice to hear good honest encouragement. as a new student, it seems like all the staff at my school want to do is intimidate you, and scare you. and they like to make it very clear that if we don't make it, there are plenty of people wanting to get into the program right behind us. what ever happened to "thank you for choosing a career that is going to better our community and each other"? thank you for being encouraging and actually wanting to motivate all of us new students!!!

thanx i start my training in sep22nd really nervous but took your advice and will heed it for my placements

i agree 100% they do intimidate and scare you throughout most of the program, and it is maddening!! it serves no purpose, other then to scare away the meek and timid. i think that is the goal. however on a more positive note i think they do that to make sure you know what you are getting into, and take it very seriously. my advice would be, do not ever let them see you panic, or freak out, they will jump you like a shark!! ask very few questions...make every attempt to figure it out on your own first, they like the independent resourceful thinkers, that do not need constant direction. best of luck!! stay strong do not let them crack you...you will get through it much easier that way.

Thanks for the info. I am a new RN student.

Anyone ever work for Healthsooth Rehab? They are all over the country, and the few hospitals that hire a lot of LPN's Any experiences with this employer, or how they pay? Thanks

It's so good to hear these comments from nurses who have been working for years. As as student about to graduate, it's terrifying! We have no clue what we are doing and your support and advice is so soothing! Thanks for being there for us!

Hey there,

I think I maybe 3 years to late writing this. hahaha. Anyway, I also want to part with some invalaubale lessons I learnt over the years.

Firstly, is to never stop asking questions, coz only though this you learn. There is no such thing as a stupid question!

Secondly, to read and find out. Carry a notebook with you all the time. Any new medical terminology or a new procedure that you observe, write down and find out.

Thridly, do not be selfish with the knowledge that you have, impart to your new collegues and nursing students.

Afterall, we are all a team, working together to achieve good team dynamics and to provide the best of care to our clients.

The most horrible scene that I ever saw was nurses picking on each other flaws. Don't kill our young as they are the ones that will carry on the tradition of compassion and care.

Thanks.

wow i was really touched by the message.I think its a major booster. What will you say to someone who is too scared of making mistakes?.
