SmilingBluEyes I agree with all your advise to first year that is excellent. First year read this and use it. Find a few close class mates you have things in common. Form studies groups and a shoulder to cry on and stay out of all the competition like those that brag I got a A on that test. Pass and go on. and as SmilingBluEyes says no gossip congrats for making the choice on becoming a
Hi all. I have been checking these boards all through nursing school, and finally decided to join. Graduated May '08 and passed boards July '08. I am looking for my first RN position at a hospital in northern nj. I have filled out many applications and it seems most things are done online with no contact with recruiters. Anyone have any advice for me? In my past career, it never took this long to get a job and things were done much differently (not totally online with no personal contact). Any advice would be most welcome. Thank you.:typing

well I am a new grad waiting to sit for boards,I got hired Monday for a med/surg position I really liked the floor manager she has managed that floor for 8 years and said they have very little turnover. My first impression of floor was postive,it was quite and calm. The position offered was 3 12hr the usual ratio is 6:1 and every other week 4 days optional.I am excited but nervous, should I bring lab book and drug guide .Thanks
Defniitely bring that lab book and drug guide, until you have them memorized you'll use them every day. After awhile you can leave them in your locker and only drag them out when you run across something unusual. Have fun on medsurge. I could never handle that many patients. I get too worried about them. I hate pain. I want to help everyone all the time so I went to ICU so I could be with my pts constantly. NICU actually, because the diapers are smaller (and the pts are cuter).
I work med-surg. Passed boards in July have been on the unit full time since. We have the 6-1 ratio and is it really busy all the time. I am second shift which made the transition from graduate to RN a little easier. I have had a great expierence, it is never the same day twice, I am amazed at how much I learn every night. I am also very lucky because the girls I work with are really wonderful.

I absolutely love vents and trachs. I think it is such an awesome skill-building opportunity for any new grad. These patients often have extensive admission history and require a large amount of care. I've been working as a new nurse on a ventilator weaning unit for almost 2 months. I worked on this same floor as a tech for 2 years, and although I was scared when I first started, I could not imagine dealing with so many of those walkie talkie patients. :)
