Tips for CNA's Caring for Schizophrenic Resident

I need to give a quick, non-formal presentation to a class of CNA's on Schizophrenia/paranoia in the elderly. The last topic is what I need help with, which is tips on CARE-(How can a CNA help?). Also tips on what not to do or say can be helpful.

***They are aware that most CNA's will not generally have psych patients, this is for general education on the topic to raise awareness of mental health conditions and prepare them for the possibility of a schizophrenic resident/patient they are closely caring for.

Examples I came up with are helping to manage medication side effects to reduce non-compliance, (observe and report skin changes like rash or scratching; dry mouth or constant coughing). Also do not challenge their perception of reality, offer support to build trust.

I've never worked Geri-psych, though I've worked in memory care units as well as psych units. Based on mY experience with Pts with schizophrenia, one thing I rely on my aides is to tell me when a pt has a problem. People with a psych dx aren't always make their needs knows r/t bowels or other skin injuries as well as changes to their baseline orientation/ mentation.

Things not to do: don't argue with clients or engage in debates with them. Don't allow yourself to be in a situation with no exit path.
