Tips on ASU BSN admission?

I have an MBA in addition to a BA - and I am going the ADN route. From what I have heard, ASU is very hypercompetitive to get in, and I would sooner try my luck with the lottery system at the community colleges. They can basically take whomever they wish to...I would sooner do a bridge program to get my BSN without going through the hassle.

I would talk with an advisor soon. Your GPA has to be reeeaallly high. It is a very competitive school. I, too, am going the ADN route and will continue on to get my BSN at ASU through their bridge program. Talk to an advisor either at the Community College level or at ASU. They'll give you the straight story. All I've heard from the advisor at MCC is that she's had gals try over and over again to get into the nursing school at ASU and they could have been almost done at MCC by then.

ASU works as a point system...7pts total. 4 points for your GPA, 1 point for Math part of NET, 1pt for English part of NET, and 1pt for the essay. They only look at 10pre-req grades to make up your GPA since you already have a BS in bio (3 of the pre-reqs are waived). Last year, the lowest point total they accepted was about a 5.84 if I remember correctly. I am also finishing up my pre-reqs for Fall 2006. I wanted to apply to their Banner program for this coming January, but I fell into a complication with my pre-reqs. Anyway, for example, if you have a 3.7GPA, get a 90% in math, and an 80% in English, then you already have a 5.4 point total (and would still have the essay points to add). I would think that if you at least get 6.1, you would for sure get in. Hope this helps.

Just elaborating a bit on what was already said. If I recall correctly, you need to complete 13 of the 17 prereq courses to apply to ASU; if you already have a BS/BA degree, the nursing department lets you waive the 2 English courses and the one Philosophy/Logic course making it only 10 courses that are needed and applied to the GPA calculation.

So your 3.7 could be even better once the 10 course are selected. The math test is simple math and you should be able to get very close to a 1.0. Based on the 7pt system...

GPA___ 3.7

Math__ .98

Read__ 0.7

Writ__ 0.7

Total_ 6.08 Should be well within the cutoff!

Just a little background....I am working on my last few requesisites before applying to ASU. I already have a B.S. in Biology, so I don't have many prerequisites to complete. Been thinking about going back to nursing school for for a while, but the time in my life hasn't been right up until now. I am currently a marketing manager (I know, NOTHING like nursing).
I've noticed how competetive it has become to get into nursing school....can anyone tell me what kind of GPA is required for ASU's program? I have a 3.7 --is this acceptable? I have read that some people with 3.8's did not get into U of A. Can anyone comment?

I don't know about ASU in particular, but adn programs tend to be a little more competitive than bsn programs due to the massive numbers of people applying to the shorter program.

I am trying to up my odds by applying to both the community colleges and ASU (don't want to do Grand Canyon because I don't know if I would fit in at that school, philosophically speaking). The programs will take about the same amount of time for me.

I expect a wait, either way --since the application date is so far off from the actual start date at ASU.

Yea, the ADN and BSN program lengths were a push for me as well. I'm not sure how long the ADN program would be, but the 16 month BSN programs are fast enough for me.

I agree with the idea that the more students applying to a program should make it more competive; however, when lottery systems are used or the entrance requirements discourage applicants, then I think the more students equals more competition idea falls apart.

What made you decide to go into nursing?

I almost went to business school --I took my GMAT, did well, searched my soul then decided against it. It just isn't where my heart is.
