Time Commitment during Grossmont Nursing School

U.S.A. California

Hey Everyone,

I just got accepted to Grossmont's Nursing program (yay!). I will have to arrange for childcare during the time that I am in school or on my way to clinicals (or wait until Fall 2009 for the E/W program).

For those who have been through it, could you please give me an idea of what times I might be scheduled? And what other time commitments I might have besides what it on the schedule.

Thanks so much!

congratulations on getting into grossmont! i think it's a really great nursing school.

as far as time commitment.... so far (i'm finishing 2nd semester) we've had 3 hours of class twice per week. (for the first month of first semester i think there was class twice a week for six or eight hours, but we didn't have clinicals for that first month, so i think it worked out to about the same time commitment.) first semester we had one 6 hour day at clinicals, & second semester we had either two 6 hour days or one 12 hour day, depending on what you're assigned. they like you to come into the simulation lab to work on your skills (especially during first semester), but i think i only went a couple of times. there's also two pharm classes you have to finish by 2nd semester, but that's only a couple of hours a week.

there's a good amount of reading, but i don't think it's TOOOO much. a lot of people in the program have children & families & part-time jobs & it's not easy, but they're doing well.

overall, i think it's a solid program & they definitely want you to do well & succeed.

good luck with whichever school you choose!

Would you mind sharing the times you were actually in class or clinicals? I have a 1st grader that is in school from 7:45a-2:10p and a preschooler that I need to schedule around. I'm trying to make this work with minimal daycare costs. I really don't want to wait another year to start.

Thanks for all your help!

FYI, Grossmont used to have a preschool and there was also a state funded preschool in La Mesa that alot of students took their children to. Even if you don't qualify for financial assistance, Childcare Resource Center will give you referrals. I always found it helpful to keep the kids close. Congrats on your acceptance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations! Yeah there is a school on Grant Ave in La Mesa for working moms or school moms. My son went to a state funded pre-school that was in with the public elementary but it was only from 8-12? not sure. But the big school up Grant Ave was all day. Think its above Lemon Ave school in La Mesa but not certain about that.

YMCA Childcare Resource Center is definitely something to look into :)

Again, my congratulations to you!

I'm confused. So, for NURS 120 last Fall, the class time listed was Monday (7:30-4:20p), Wed (8:00- 1:50p), and TWTHF (TBA). That seems like more than the 6 hours a week for this particular class. Do you select a 3 hour time slot within these times or are you actually in class the whole time (and then some).

we started out with that schedule for the first four weeks. then once we started clinical, we only went to lecture one day (i had tuesdays 7:30-4:30) & had one clinical day (i had thursdays, 6:30am-1:30pm) for the rest of the semester.

What were your prereq grades going into the program?
