Hi all! I was wondering who will be applying to TCC in Portsmouth for Spring 2020 admit. Wondering what you got on the HESI as well as if you finished any pre reqs/co reqs and GPA with those. Thanks and good luck!

Hi I would love any and all tips for the HESI! Haven’t taken mine yet!

Hey Demi!

The two main resources I used were the Pocket Prep app and the Elsevier Hesi A2 Prep book. **Tips: First thing you do as soon as you sit down is write down the math conversions (IVXLCDM, KHDDCM, oz->gallons, etc.) on your scratch paper. Also, don't rush! I took my time at first, and then I rushed towards the end unnecessarily. 5.5 hours is actually a long *** time. This was the order I did my exam in (I alternated between long/hard sections with easier/shorter sections):

A&P - Because I only allowed myself a week to study, I splurged and additionally supplemented the Elsevier book with the ReadyForTheHesi.org A&P study guide. Definitely do not only rely solely on the Elsevier book because they are not detailed enough. On the exam, I surprisingly had quite a number of questions on bones! Study different types of joints (fibrous, ball in socket, etc.), bones, osteoblasts/clasts and intramembranous ossification (I did not expect that to be on there!!)

Chemistry - The Elsevier and Pocket Prep app were sufficient enough for this section in my opinion. Alpha, beta, gamma radiation, carbs, lipids, etc.

Grammar - Who vs whom. Than vs then. Independent vs dependent clause. Got one question asking me to identify the predicate. Lots of subject-verb agreement. Adverbs and their placement (before or after verb). There was one question that asked something along the lines of, "It is imperative that he (keep/keeps)." https://www.phrasemix.com/phrases/its-imperative-that-something-someonedo-something

Math - Roman numerals, metric and english conversions, military time, ratios, fractions, percentages. Know how to convert improper fractions to mixed fractions and vice versa. Quite a few word problems, so definitely familiarize yourself with those. You have enough time to double check your work a million times, so do that girl! Also, beware of the on-test calculator. Double clicking a number does not input it twice, so wait a moment before clicking the same number again.

Vocab - Simply use the Elsevier and Pocket Prep. Maybe look into some Quizlets if you want, but not 100% necessary. This is good resource if you want to over prepare: https://quizlet.com/144697960/hesi-a2-words-flash-cards/ You will encounter some words you don't know, but process of elimination and context clues are your friends.

Reading - I didn't even read the Elsevier section, haha. Just practiced a whole bunch. Elsevier has good example texts, though!

Critical Thinking - AHH I was so nervous for this portion, as I'm sure you are, too. I went on different Quizlets to gauge the difficulty of these questions, but tbh they weren't that helpful and a lot harder than what was on the Hesi. Just basic "what would you, the nurse, do in this scenario/prioritize first". Choose whichever one sounds the worst (like girl with kidney infection is bleeding in her urine). Ex: Another nurse is diluting morphine for their addiction. I chose to notify the charge nurse. Ex: Someone asked to take you out to coffee to discuss another physician. I chose to maintain professional boundaries. Stuff like that.

This is most of what I can recall for now. If I remember anything else, I'll be sure to let you know! When are you scheduled for your HESI?

@bettalover hey thanks for the information, I am taking mine on Monday 8/12. I am so nervous. I just completed all my pre courses to apply, Fall 2019 I have to take A&P 2 and Micro, I hope i score a 90% or higher on the HESI! Im nervous idk if im really ready!

Hey everyone, so I’m looking at my HESI results on evolve. The critical thinking portion isn’t on there for me. Are you guys able to see it on yours? I’m worried what if I didn’t finish it all the way or something?! Lol

Hey! I was able to see it on mine. When you signed up, did you select "with CT"?

Yes, I am able to see mine but a few hours after I took it, I wasn't able to. When did you take it? If you took it today, it may take a few hours to see it.

Nurseme42 okay I see it now. Do you know what class average means? Like is the class everyone at tcc?

I'm not really sure what class average means. I'm guessing its the average from the scores of all the students at TCC that have taken each subject but I could be wrong.

Hi Thank you so much for this info, it is greatly appreciated! I don’t take the HESI till December. I’ll be applying to the fall 2020 cohort but when I apply I’ll be missing BIO142 and BIO 150 so I’m assuming I won’t get in and reapply for the spring 2021 when I have those done and retake anything I get a B or lower in and try to take chemistry and statistics so I can apply to Sentara as well! If you have any tips at all please let me know!!

I will be missing AP 2 and micro as well when I apply! fingers crossed all A’s and a decent HESI score are enough!!!

I truly hope the best of luck to the both of you. Be sure to let us know how it goes!!

Hey guys!

I'm going to be applying for Spring 2020 as well. (SUPER Late application turn in) I've taken every pre/co-requisite excluding A+P 2 and Micro which I will be taking on the Virginia Beach campus this fall along with chemistry. If anyone's looking for a study buddy for either of those classes, I'm always game. I got a 90.86 on the HESI which I just took today. I'm so glad that's done!

I'm hoping to apply for the concurrent degree program with ODU so that I can have a Bachelor's degree in nursing by the end of it all. I noticed that chemistry was one of the ODU requirements and jumped on that as quickly as I could. Does anyone know anything more about the concurrent enrollment program? I noticed that there's another program with University of Phoenix as well.

Good luck to all!

Hey! CCrawford1994 I’m taking A+P and micro at the VB campus this fall as well! I have Emily Wilson and dale horeth as instructors. What’s your schedule like? I’m nervous to take both classes at the same time. They are going to be hard. You did great on the HESI so you’re probably getting into the program. I only got an 82 so I’m just hoping for the best.
